You've heard of Pentatonix, now get ready for Superfruit! Superfruit is the dynamic duo of Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi, originally a YouTube channel, but now expanded into a full out music group. The YouTube channel has been home to several mashups and covers alike (how can we forget "Hip Hop Goes Broadway"?), but fans first got a taste of the pair's original music from the animated video for "Bad 4 Us".
Now, we've officially got a full-fledged Superfruit album, and it's like Christmas came early. "Future Friends" started out as two EPs come together for one giant album. It boasts 16 songs, one of which is a remix of the title track, and not your typical remix either as it is comprised solely of piano and a chorus of beautiful voices. Think of "Future Friends" as your feel good Friday night music. It's hard to pick a favorite because every song is as energetic and lyrical as the next.
It's a different vibe of music, especially coming from these two, who we are used to hearing in Pentatonix. Different in this case doesn't mean that it's bad, though. Each song transports us back to the 90s because it gives off that new age electronic pop music. In the case of "Heartthrob", though, we're stuck in the 90s with no intention of going back. There are a few ballad-esque songs--see: "Deny U" and "Goodbye From Lonely", but the real show-stopper, at least in my opinion, has to be "GUY.exe". The song is about being able to supersize the perfect guy despite everyone saying that finding someone that perfect is impossible.
If you love Pentatonix and are constantly cycling through their albums and EPs, give "Future Friends" a try. Even if you aren't cycling through PTX's music, give "Future Friends" a try. It's a good time in 16 songs.
