As an avid fan of The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), I could not be prouder of his latest album, Starboy. Although he grabbed most people's attention after Beauty Behind the Madness, his long-time fans have loved him since the days of his sophomore album, Kissland and of course his original masterpiece, Trilogy, which is a combination of his mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence).
Starboy is a character created by The Weeknd that allows him to come out of his shell, to whom we were first introduced in the music video for the title-track, alongside Murphy the Leopard (who represents The Weeknd's spirit animal). The Weeknd has been known to create storylines with his music, and has been called the Quentin Tarantino of music videos, including his new short film, Mania, which introduces a few of The Weeknd's newest tracks from Starboy.
The complete album has only been out since Friday, but I can tell it's a good one. Statistically speaking, it has already been dubbed the worldwide number one album, and is topping the charts on iTunes in 80 countries...it's no wonder he calls himself the legend of the fall; and with such a loyal fan base, it's no wonder this album gained popularity so quickly.
The Weeknd stayed true to his past themes in his music: dark moods, drug references, and the creation of materialistic female characters. The only thing missing? His iconic hairdo. However, we're not complaining about his new style.
The album is 18 tracks long, so it'll take a while to completely absorb Abel Tesfaye's musical genius, but some early favorites are "Party Monster," "Die for You," and "All I Know" (which features Future). Many people are also noticing the strong influence of Michael Jackson on The Weeknd's music, which is most notable on this album with songs such as "A Lonely Night" and "Secrets." In an interview, Tesfaye said that he wants his fans to feel as though his music is a part of them, just as Michael Jackson's music is a part of him.
After years of hard work and determination, The Weeknd is finally getting the recognition and praise that he deserves. It has been a privilege to watch him grow as an artist and conquer so many different genres. Only Abel knows what's next for his story, but it's guaranteed to be good.
