Gucci Mane is an American rapper who helped pioneer the hip-hop sub-genre of ‘trap music’, and the founder of his own record label, 1017 Records. Gucci has six studio albums and has made dozens of mixtapes with huge artists including Drake, Lil Wayne, Omarion, and Mariah Carrey. His most recent album titled ‘Mr. Davis’ is what I will be giving my opinion on in this article.
After listening to this album completely through once I knew I really liked it, after listening to it again it grew on me even more. He talks about his life pretty much throughout the whole album, which was interesting to hear about. Gucci also brought on a lot of big name features for multiple songs which made for some different sounds that flowed very good with his style. Some of the features on ‘Mr. Davis’ include Migos, Big Sean, The Weekend, Ty Dollar $ign, School Boy Q, Chris Brown, Slim Jxmmi, Young Dolph, and others that bring this album to another level.
There were a few songs that I especially enjoyed, one being ‘Change’ featuring Big Sean, in this Gucci talks about how he is different from the ‘old’ Gucci which honestly seems to be true, I believe he changed a lot after being in prison for 39 months for gun possession. Another song that is definitely a fan favorite is ‘I get the bag’ which features Migos. This is a song you will be hearing at bars, on the radio, and possibly at a party, considering it has a quick upbeat sound and features Migos which is always a plus to me. Another song I really liked is the track ‘Lil Story’ where Gucci and School Boy Q, basically tell a short story about how once upon a time they were broke and now they’re very rich. The song pretty much spells out that they did not enjoy being poor, but its okay because now they're extremely rich. This song is funny to me because the examples and ways that they tell this tale of becoming wealthy. Lastly, but in no order, the song ‘Jumped out the whip’ stuck out to me because I really enjoy the beat made by Metro Boomin’, and also really enjoyed hearing A$AP Rocky on a new track with Gucci. This song is very explicit, and the two rap very cocky on it, but I still find it to be a good song and if you enjoy rap you too may enjoy this song.
Although I have been a fan of Gucci Mane before hearing this album, I honestly really liked it and have been listening to it a decent amount as of recent. It is explicit rap and has some graphic lyrics, but if you enjoy rap you will at least enjoy a few of the tracks on this album. I would give it an 8.5/10 based on the summary I have given above.
