For the last three years, I have religiously glued myself to my couch every Saturday watching game after game like it's my job. Highlight jump balls, fast-paced offenses and the feeling of the school spirit blaring through the speakers of my TV have filled my weekends. But this year, things are different.
I keep tabs on the Towson Tigers football team since I attend the school, and I am a Georgia Bulldogs fan because I was born in Atlanta.
But I have never been more disinterested in watching college football than I have been this year.
Have you ever had a scenario where you play a game and you already know who is going to win? Or maybe watched a horror film, where you already know the blonde chick and football jock making out in the woods are getting killed first?
Well, this college football season has been like that for me and it's all because of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. I believe he is a special talent with a knack for accuracy and phenomenal, in terms of taking care of the football. This season, he has thrown 28 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 10 games, and there are still a few more games left before the college football playoff. He is the one good quarterback Alabama has never had.
Typically Alabama is used to having a conservative quarterback that takes the short passes, takes care of the football and relies on the running game and hard nose defense to impose their will on opponents. This year, Tagovailoa has single-handedly changed the identity of Alabama. Now they are an air raid offense that looks like they should be in the Big 12, but they still have a defense full of NFL-ready, five-star athletes. They are basically a college football version of the NBA's Golden State Warriors or the UCONN women's team in college basketball.
As a Georgia fan, this is killing me. Last year, Towson played Alabama in the National Championship game and when I first started watching, I remember Towson being up by two scores and feeling like there was nothing stopping us from winning that year. I was in my sprinter stance, ready to run around the block hooting and hollering, and then out of nowhere, they sub him in. 6'1 freshman Tua Tagovailoa got subbed into the game and things switched up real quick. Next thing you know, I look up and the clock is running out and the score is 26 - 23, with Alabama as champions...again. As if Nick Saban needed another championship after winning three of the last six going into that game. Now they have one of the best quarterbacks, one of the best defenses and the best coach in college football.
Since last year, in the biggest game of the year, this guy has been torturing my college football experience. Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan, and of course Georgia are all viable contenders, but it's like FOX co-host Shannon Sharpe on the show "Undisputed" always says: "Every year is the Alabama Invitational."
And this year I don't think there are any teams looking RSVP.
