Last night was the much anticipated “American Horror Story” premiere that we have all been waiting for. “American Horror Story,” not only shocked the world last night with its theme finally being displayed—which I guessed partially correct in my previous article—but it left us all flabbergasted at the events unfolding on the screen. From Sarah Paulson being held underwater by angry men with pitchforks to Matt Bomer being dressed in old-fashioned clothing with long hair and a beard, the events of last night’s episode were truly insane. But before we get into too much detail of last night’s episode, it seems that a new addition to the cast has been added.
In the season premiere of “AHS” last night, we got to see the wonderful Cuba Gooding Jr. join the cast. Despite there being no Jessica Lange or Gaga in sight, there is rumor that our favorite Countess will return at some point this season. Others scheduled to return include Lily Rabe, Andre Holland, Denis O'Hare, Wes Bentley, Evan Peters, Cheyenne Jackson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Finn Wittrock, Matt Bomer, Leslie Jordan, Jacob Artist, and Adina Porter.
Now on to what you all came here for: spoilers.
In last night’s episode of “American Horror Story,” we learned that this season's theme is “My Roanoke Nightmare.” Portrayed in a docuseries format, “AHS” seems to have taken a page out of “A Haunting” and made their show a series of ‘dramatized events’ based on true stories and experiences. Not only is this format an interesting choice, but it has also not been done before in this series. Following this, in the opener, we trail a young couple Shelby and Matt Miller, portrayed by Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr., in their relocation to North Carolina after Matt is assaulted on the street and seriously injured and Shelby miscarries her baby. One night, while they’re picnicking, they stumble upon a giant colonial-style abandoned farm house which they immediately bid on and purchase out from under a group of hostile North Carolinian natives.
Now this is where things start to get interesting.
Upon living in this house for a few nights, strange things begin to happen. Between teeth hailing from the sky and Shelby almost being drowned by men with pitchforks, her husband Matt installs multiple cameras before leaving Shelby all alone so that he can go to his new job in the city. (If this doesn’t scream danger, then I don’t know what does.) So, instead of asking to go with her husband, Shelby stays in the house with Matt’s sister, who is then thrown into the plot and victimized by this group of unknowns alongside Shelby, while Matt watches from afar through the home security system installed on his phone.
Now the end is what really gets you.
In the very ending of the premiere, which was only an hour long, we see Shelby fight with Matt because he does not want to leave the house after all that she and his sister have had to endure there. So, like any rational person, Shelby gets in her car and leaves. Two minutes later, though, she hits a woman with her car and then proceeds to follow the woman into the woods with only a flashlight—not her best idea obviously. From here, Shelby slowly begins to go deeper into the woods before she finally ends up surrounded by people who look like they are from The Lost Colony of Roanoke and then the scene ends.
What a cliffhanger!
So now, not only are we left anticipating the events of next Wednesday’s “American Horror Story,” we are left wondering what just happened and how much scarier this show is going to get this season. This episode was very confusing from beginning to end, and twists just kept being thrown at you with no real explanation as to what they mean yet so anything could be in store for next week's episode, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.
