Why Agents of SHIELD Has the Representation That Matters

Agents of SHIELD is one of the greatest shows on television because of their ability to REPRESENT different types of people.

In honor of the upcoming season 4 of Agents of SHIELD, I thought- why not talk about everything this TV show does honorably?

One of the best things about Agents of SHIELD is its phenomenal representation of its characters. In this age of television, representation of characters is how a show gains a large fan base. Many shows have repeatedly failed to portray its characters accurately, but Agents of SHIELD is a show that’s absolutely fantastic at it. The females on the show aren’t written as love interests for the male characters or written as sidekicks. Instead, these females have layers of skills, emotions, desires, and hopes. They have all developed throughout their time on the show as well, and don’t adhere to only one social category, which makes the show all the more convincing.

Skye

She went from being a brilliant hacker, to also being the first superhero on the show. Skye’s character throughout the 3 seasons of Agents of SHIELD has been shown to have many more layers than meets the eye. She went from having to find her place on the team and being accepted, to dealing with her ostracized superpowers, to figuring out where her loyalties lay, to channeling herself into something constructive while she dealt with the aftermath of being mind controlled. All in all, Skye aka Daisy Johnson aka Quake is an inspiration to all girls out there due to her sheer determination to always come out on top even given lose-lose circumstances.

Jemma Simmons

She went from being the adorkable, goody-two shoes biochem scientist to also becoming the confident woman who fearlessly went undercover in Hydra and was, through all odds, able to keep herself alive when she was stranded on an alien planet for six and a half months. Jemma Simmons has proved over and over that love and compassion are your strengths and that fear can be overcome. Not only this, but she is an inspiration to so many young women to get jobs in STEM careers. This is a career field that is greatly dominated by men, but Jemma has proved that women can find their way to the top. Through her quick and analytical thinking, Jemma has proved time and time again that saving the day isn’t just about being able to use a gun and having superpowers, it’s about being able to think through problems efficiently and find a solution- because brainpower is a superpower.

Melinda May

She went from being the most badass female on the team to still being the badass female on the team, but for different reasons. Melinda May used to be a woman who wore her heart on her sleeve, but the toughest call of her life changed that. May was faced with killing a child- a super powered child who killed people by sucking on their pain- to save a number of lives of SHIELD agents that were trapped inside a building with the girl. This decision had many emotional consequences for May, and a period of her life afterwards was full with darkness. However, after May came back from desk duty to help Coulson, she channeled this pain for when she needed it to defeat the villains. This proves that pain can be used for good rather than bad, it just matters how it’s channeled. Melinda May is a hero for her actions, and an inspiration.

Bobbi Morse

She went from being one of the top agents in the SHIELD academy to also completing a PhD in biology. Bobbi is the character that proves that heroes don’t have to fit into any one category. They can be a scientist while also doing physical field work. Bobbi always managed to stay strong, even when she was relentlessly tortured by Grant Ward. Even though her alliances were with another organization, she never let them hurt her friends at SHIELD. When the “new” SHIELD went to hunt down Skye to take her and investigate her powers, Bobbi tried to protect her and told them she didn't believe in what they were doing even though her alliance was with the “new” SHIELD. Bobbi’s complete faith in her friends and her desire to keep them all from harm is what makes her such a dimensional and beautiful character on the show.

Elena Rodriguez

She went from being a normal, everyday human being to undergoing terrigenesis which gave her superpowers. Elena used her new powers to do nothing but good because that’s what she believed she was meant for- helping people. Elena is the type of character that TV desperately needs because she gives young Spanish-speaking boys and girls someone to look up to and be their face of hope in hardships. Elena is a character that’s praised because of her strength, her heart, and her determination to keep people safe. These are the characteristics that need to be spread to children, which is why it’s vital for kids to have good role models on TV and Elena Rodriguez is just the character to stand as a role model for Latino/a children.

Agents of SHIELD is also a show that doesn’t undermine its minority characters. For example, Elena Rodriguez’s Latina aspects weren’t ignored. In fact, she would have full conversations in Spanish with Joey Gutierrez- a gay, Latino character on the show who is also a superhero. The show even made a point of showing Agent Mack learning how to speak Spanish so that he could better communicate with Elena. In fact, instead of ending the season 3 with a minority character being the grand finale death, Lincoln Campbell, a white male character who already had good representation in the show, was the one who sacrificed himself for the team. The show definitely represents and accurately portrays a wide variety of ethnicities including African Americans, Chinese, and Latinos.

Antoine Triplett

Trip was the one whose death most impacted the team and changed the path of SHIELD. He was the glue that held them together and made them laugh, which was why his death was “necessary” to inflict pain on the team so that they could re-discover themselves and their place, especially with the new super powered humans problem on the team’s hands at that time.

Alphonso Mackenzi

Mack always saw the best in people and was easy to forgive them. He would also make sure that the team was mentally okay- checking up on everybody ever so often. Mack is one of the most relatable characters on the show as well, which makes him entertaining to watch. Whenever something confusing happened, he would be the first to admit he was confused. Whenever something scary happened, he would be the first to say “that was scary.” But it is for sure one of the toughest guys on the team.

Joey Gutierrez

Joey was initially an ordinary human who turned into a superhero also through terrigenesis. He was quick to adapt and become a consulting member of SHIELD so that he could make a positive difference by helping others with his powers. Joey always had a kind heart and could easily be trusted by others.

Additionally, the male leads on the show display great respect for all of their female co-workers. There is no gender discrimination from any character on the show which is greatly appreciated.

Phil Coulson

As the director of SHIELD, Coulson usually confides in Melinda May- his best friend- in terms of his life and his missions and direction for SHIELD. When sending his agents onto the field, he takes into consideration all of their strengths and weaknesses instead of deciding that the females should be held back for their own safety. In fact, he knows that Melinda May and Bobbi Morse are some of the best agents as they come.

Leo Fitz

Fitz has always worked side by side with his best friend Jemma Simmons, and has the greatest respect for her and everything she does. Fitz wouldn’t be Fitz without working next to Simmons. They think through every problem together to put together her biochem knowledge and his engineering knowledge for the best solutions that constantly get the team out of trouble. Fitz has also shown the highest respect for his close friend, Skye, and knows how powerful she, May, and Bobbi are when faced with a threat and admires their strength.

Lance Hunter

Hunter has been a field agent with Bobbi Morse since the beginning of their days and has never underestimated a woman. Hunter had been exposed to the fighting styles of Bobbi Morse and Isabelle Harley early on, and then Melinda May throughout his time on the team. He knew that many other agents, male or female, wouldn’t ever be able to match these ladies’ skills.

Lincoln Campbell

Even with superpowers, Lincoln has never underestimated a woman of SHIELD, partly because of just how much damage Melinda May can cause with a gun. Even though Lincoln didn’t see eye to eye with a lot of SHIELD agents, crossing Melinda May scared him because of her impeccable aim and ability to maim. Also, Lincoln had seen many inhumans with their powers and never underestimated any one of them- male or female- because of what they could do.

No show is perfect, but Agents of SHIELD has definitely had the greatest and most successful attempt at including a diverse set of characters with women, different ethnicities, and different sexualities with accurate portrayal of these minority characters. The show tries to balance out representation so that there's so kids have strong characters to look up to depending on what their ethnicity or gender is. This show is definitely making strides in the right direction, so BRAVO to one of the greatest shows in existence.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads.
