"If you’re willing to work hard, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from or what you look like or where you live. It doesn’t matter whether you’re black or white, or Hispanic or Asian, or Native American, or young or old, or rich or poor, able, disabled, gay or straight. You can make it here in America if you’re willing to try.” -President Obama
This quote is the summary of why I believe free college tuition should not be a reality. Recently there has been controversy regarding the issue of the increasing amount of debt for recent college graduates, and how this debt is preventing them to have a "successful" professional career.
I have worked hard throughout my entire high school career to not only be accepted to a good university but also to have a good amount of it paid for with scholarships. I took rigorous classes to be able to skip a semester and reduce the costs. I faced failure so many times by not having a high enough grade to have a good enough GPA.
College is the transition between being a teenager and an adult. It is the preparation to have a successful career and eventually have a profitable future.
I achieved a high enough GPA to have most of my college tuition covered so I wonder this: If you haven't worked hard enough to have a good GPA why should your college tuition be free?
I pay a good amount for my education; however, I see it as another thing that is simply not free. Nothing is this life is free, and college education happens to be one of those. I worked hard enough to get scholarships and graduate without debt. I am not a US Citizen so I did not qualify for a student loan; however, I would not have chosen that option even if I were eligible.I knew that my hard work had paid off when I received my financial aid package. Graduating debt free is possible for everyone, for those who have worked hard enough.
I understand that many high school students have had difficult circumstances that make those 4 years incredibly hard; yet, by having a goal in mind anything can be achieved.
