Freshman year is something you can never quite describe, it's chock full of firsts; the first time your living on your own, the first time thinking for yourself, the first time finding your actual niche of friends, and maybe even your favorite place for coffee. It doesn't matter if you're social or not, you'll have your own bout of firsts regardless. For me, this meant finding a group of friends that are basically my family away from home, falling in love, and learning to live on my own for the very first time.
But as soon as you start your upper years of college, you're no longer living out those firsts in your day to day life. Now you've been there done that, you know how to live on your own (we hope) and you have a group that you've become inseparable with. Don't be mistaken though, we have much more to learn as we continue through our adult lives. Even still, it seems as if our bout of firsts are over, and maybe they are.
Though we may feel a little put out that we no longer have that rush that comes with firsts, we cannot miss how our difference is good and fun. Now that we're more comfortable with our surroundings, we start branching out more and meeting even more people. We surround ourselves with the ones we love the most and they've become our support group; they've become our safety net.
So look at it this way, we're by all means still within the area of our firsts. We still have yet to live on our own without a roommate, we still have yet to understand what it's like to have our first day of work doing what we absolutely love; that job we needed a degree to get. There will be a first time to turn 21, to officially not revolve around a school-year schedule, etc.
There is so much more life yet to come, so take today to look around and be thankful for what is here and now. Be thankful for that group of friends, your tiny apartment you share with those girls you'd not be able to live without, the fact that you get to go to school and get that job you dream about. You've got so much life left to live, so many more firsts, but that is all to come. Take joy in the now.
