The Post Spring Break Depression

We’ve all been there, and we’re probably there now.

After spending five days with some of your best friends in Cancun, Miami or on a cruise ship, the spring break freedom withdrawal is starting to sink in. You probably worked your butt off the week prior to spring break so that you would be sure to enjoy the entire week and hopefully get away with doing nothing but drinking drinks on a beach through a fancy straw. But now you're back to reality and realizing that finding the motivation to work on that lab report or write that speech is harder to find than you thought. So to make it through the after spring break funk, here are three things to think about to jump start that motivation.

1. The whole GPA thing.

As much as we like to tell ourselves we’re more than a number, grade point averages are still a significant portion of a college student's resume. The first week back was definitely the worst; let’s be honest, we were still probably rubbing aloe on our sunburns and wishing we were waking up at noon instead of setting an alarm for 8 a.m. To try and get over the post-spring-break depression, though, try spending a little extra time in the library. Maybe even just sitting in there can kick start the studying incentive. But definitely remember that from here, there are only a couple more weeks till the end of the semester or for some of us *gasps* graduation.

2. Warmer days mean more days to study outside.

If your GPA alone doesn’t spark something in you, remember that with spring break (even if it’s in the controversial first week of March) that spring is coming. Warm weather, pool days and darties are all ahead of you now. So if you have a porch or a nice piece of grass or a tree to sit under, bring that textbook along and remember that it’s a hell of a lot nicer to read about economics outside on a beautiful day than it is cooped up inside.

3. Summer is on the way.

Spring break pretty much marks the halfway point of the semester. Those quarter classes start and you realize you’ve passed the half way mark. Which could incite one of two emotions for you: panic or motivation. Whether or not you act on these emotions is up to you. But the panic will come from realizing that there’s literally only five more Mondays until finals.

Don't let the panic overwhelm you, but just take a step back and pull out your planner.

Let us collectively pull ourselves together a little bit. We got this. It’s second semester and maybe the semester before spring break wasn’t going too well, but it definitely could be now. So let’s finish this semester strong.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
