It all started with a surprise that was planned by my parents. My brother and I were told to keep our eyes shut as we were lead to the living room. The anticipation was building, and we couldn't wait to see.
"Open them!" my parents exclaimed.
There, in front of our eyes, was a beautiful Cane Corso. We ran to her, started hugging her and petting her as much as we could. It was the best gift we could ever receive; she was our first dog. Who knew that she would be such a major part of our life from that day on and for the 14 years following?
Between watching her play ball with herself, which I didn't know could be possible, her clumsiness, slobbering us with love, her little nub of a tail shaking all of the time, and her gentleness with every person she met, you couldn't help but fall in love with her.
Although she was intimidating with her size and loud barks, she could easily prove you wrong with her kindness and love.
Dogs really do become family. They are a part of your day-to-day life, there for you through all of the rough times with kisses and cuddles, and they welcome you home with wagging tails. All they want is to see you and make you happy.
Almost a week ago, we lost Mia. She had lived a long 14 years with us, which was more than we could ever ask for. She was an amazing dog and what made home, home. But it was her time to go, and I was just happy that we could make her have the best life she could when she was here.
For anyone who has lost a pet, it may feel like no other day will be the same following, and it will feel extremely different and unknown. But eventually, you will continue on and know that you were lucky enough to have them and be a part of their life.
Now, they are in a place where they aren't suffering. A dog isn't just an animal or a pet; they are your best friends, your family. They could never be forgotten.
In honor of my beautiful pup, Mia.
