How to get your life back on track after Homecoming

What to Do After Homecoming

This past weekend was Howard University's Homecoming, and let me tell you it was absolutely astonishing. With yardfest coming back in full force, thousands of people flooded the DC area to take part in the festivities. Vendors came to show off their wares to the crowds, performers took the stage to hype people up, and everyone took the chance to pop out for Howard. Even the tailgate was packed with students and alumni, friends and family from all over who shared one thing; their love for Howard University. Of course, with all of this school pride and spirit going around there were also parties all day, every day. Frat parties, club parties, house parties and probably some that I don't even know about, all took place in these past two days. But as the weekend winds down and the music in the streets or booming through the dorms begins to subside, a lot of us students are hit with the reality that class is on Monday. No more cheering in the yard in the rain with friends, or taking insta-worthy pictures to get extra likes. Instead t's back to the classroom with our teacher that probably has a new assignment waiting for us at the door, or that project that you postponed so you could go chill and squad up with your friends. So what do you do to get your life back on track after such an eventful weekend?

First, take a moment to really think about what you have or had to do for your classes. Look through your notes on Sunday night to see if there's anything important that you may have forgotten. I suggest writing down whatever you need to get done somewhere visible, like on a post it on the wall or on a mirror. It should be somewhere that you know you frequently look at. After that, really plan out your next steps; do you need to go to the ILab? Do you need to print anything out or write something up real quick for class? Make sure you get whatever that is out of the way so that on Monday you're not stressing and taking a huge L. Another important thing, make sure your room is clean. I know a lot of us probably threw around some clothes or have clutter after trying to find that perfect outfit or having kickbacks. That's college and it's fine, but clean it up so you have a good amount of free space to let your mind focus on work. Finally, just take maybe 10 minutes to read over some notes. It's such a small amount of time, but trust me it's gonna help when that one teacher gives you a pop quiz on what he taught last week.

So don't stress about these classes coming back. We're still in school, and even if Homecoming is over there's always next year. So do what you gotta do to stay on track with your classes, and just get it done. Trust me it will be worth it in the long run.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
