The NFL playoffs are a couple of weeks away now and there are a lot of teams fighting to make it. In the AFC, it is very crowded as the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and New England Patriots are all fighting for that coveted number one seed. For the playoffs, the four division winners and the two best records after that make the playoffs in the AFC and NFC. I will be giving my opinion who will make the playoffs in the AFC. I will start with the sixth seed and eventually end with the first seed.
Sixth Seed (Second Wildcard): Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins started the season off with a shaky start, but are starting to find their stride as the season is ending. Their defense is coming together and their rushing has improved thanks to a couple of breakout performances by running back Jay Ajayi. They are currently tied with the Denver Broncos for the sixth seed and the last wildcard in the AFC. They recently lost their starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, for the rest of the season, but could get him back if they make playoffs. The next three games for the Dolphins are against the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and New England Patriots. The first two games are winnable and the Denver Broncos are playing the New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, and the Kansas City Chiefs. It is very possible for Denver to lose the wildcard and have Miami slip in the playoffs. If they want to be the sixth seed, their defense and running will have to be good the next three weeks since they will struggle passing the ball without Ryan Tannehill. I see them beating the Jets and Bills but losing to the Patriots and I see the Broncos losing their last three games because I believe the Patriots, Chiefs, and Raiders are the AFC's top three teams.
Fifth Seed (First Wildcard): Oakland Raiders
The Oakland Raiders are this year's breakout team as they shocked the league with great play from quarterback Derek Carr and their wrecking ball at linebacker Khalil Mack. These Raiders have the same record as the Kansas City Chiefs, but due to the Chiefs winning both match ups against the Raiders, they are second in the division. The Raiders for a while were a laughing stock in the league but now this young team is impressing the league. These young Raiders still have more time to develop so this might not be there best that we have seen. Even though they are a fifth seed, expect the Raiders to make some noise in the playoffs as they look to prove to everyone that they belong with the AFC elites. I see Kansas City and Oakland winning the rest of their games, so Oakland will stay at the fifth seed. Oakland will be a hot destination this off-season, as this team looks to continue this great season.
Fourth Seed: Tennessee Titans (AFC South Winner)
The fourth seed will be another young team in the NFL. I predict that the Tennessee Titans will win the AFC South, led by quarterback Marcus Mariota, who has been playing great lately and one of the best running backs in the league, DeMarco Murray, along with their great defense. Last week, the Titans pulled off a huge upset by beating the defending Super Bowl champs, the Denver Broncos. They also had a rough start to the season but are starting to click near the end of the season. They have one of the best defenses in the league and also one of the best running backs in DeMarco Murray. I see them making the playoffs but having a quick exit by one of the wild card teams.
Third Seed: Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North Winner)
The third seed will be the Pittsburgh Steelers, led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and one of the best wide receivers in the league, Antonio Brown. The Steelers have had an up and down season this year, as they dealt with Big Ben being hurt and losing some critical games. They have also struggled on the road but looked to find momentum to win the division and make the playoffs. The division is Pittsburgh's to lose as the Ravens look to steal the division away from the Steelers. I expect the Steelers to win the division and to make it past the first round.
Second Seed: Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West Winner)
The Kansas City Chiefs have been quietly dominating the NFL with their defense. They have one of the league's best scoring special teams and defense. On defense they have heavy hitters, such as Justin Houston, who came back from injury recently and Eric Berry, who is one of the best safeties in the league. For special teams, they have a rookie who has been blazing through the league with his speed. His name is Tyreek Hill. He has been the Chiefs X-Factor so far this year as he has put the league on notice that he is very fast and can return a punt or kickoff for a touchdown at any giving moment. They also have Spencer Ware, who has emerged as their starting running back with Jamaal Charles battling injuries. This Chiefs team does all the dirty work it does to win and does none of the highlight plays you see on T.V. That's why this team is so underrated. They are pretty much the Spurs of the NFL. Expect them to make a deep playoff run.
First Seed: New England Patriots (AFC East Winner)
This might be a little biased, but it is also the truth. The Patriots will be the number one seed for the AFC in the playoffs. They are a game ahead of the Chiefs and Raiders plus they have a very winnable schedule left. They play the struggling Broncos, Jets, and Dolphins. They are currently the number one seed even with their star tight end Rob Gronkowski being out for the rest of the season. They have a lot of exotic screen packages as well as some great two running back sets. They have readjusted their offense to spread the ball out more to make up for Gronk's absence. Also they have one of the best defenses in the league to back them up. The Patriots know what they are doing when it comes to the end of the season and playoffs. They know what moves to make to make sure they are in the best position to win. They have been one of the NFL's elite teams for a while now and have no plans on slowing down. They are Super Bowl contenders for a reason. They know what it takes to win one since they have won four of them with Tom Brady at quarterback and the mastermind Bill Belichick as their head coach. Look for a deep playoff run from this team.
Make sure to tune in next week as I give my opinion on who will make the playoffs in the NFC. Hopefully you guys enjoyed this article and I wanted to thank you for reading it. Thank you and see you next week!
