The school year is back in full swing. This week was the first week of classes and students are already busy as ever. As I begin my sophomore year, I took some time to reflect on my freshman year and all the things I learned. I want to give some advice to you freshman about the most challenging yet fun year of your life.

1. Some of the people you meet on the first day won’t always stay your friends.

Life happens. The people you meet on your first day may not stay your friends throughout college due to different classes, clubs, and lifestyles. Your true friends will come later on.

2. You most likely won’t always get along with your roommate.

Not everyone is the same and living on your own for the first time is hard for anyone. Personalities can and will clash. Living with someone else is hard, but you will find a way to make it work.

3. It’s okay to be homesick.

Speaking from someone who is five hours away from home, I can say that homesickness is real. I can go on 10-day mission trips and not miss home. It's just different being away at college. No matter how far away you are some days you’ll miss home cooked meals and the comfort of your own bed. But don’t worry, your family is only a phone call away and breaks are a short and sweet reunion.

4. Go to class.

I cannot stress this enough, you need to go to class. One missed day and you miss an entire lecture filled with valuable information that will most likely be on the final.

5. Get to know your professors.

Having good relationships with your professors is key. If you have a good relationship with them, they will be willing to answer your questions, proof read papers, and write recommendations.

6. Do not cram the night before an exam.

Cramming for an exam the night before will do more harm than good. Make a schedule and start studying in advance to alleviate stress and help you retain information better.

7. Do the assigned reading.

Professors will assign you reading for your classes and it is so important. I learned quickly that the reading is essential to doing well in the classes; some of the information on tests come directly from the textbook, so do your assigned reading.

8. Keep meeting new people.

College brings many chances to meet new people. Even if you have an established friend group, be willing to reach out to new people and make new friends. Community is everything!

9. Learn how to say no.

College will present many opportunities for clubs, organizations, intramurals, and extra-curricular activities. College is all about having fun but you cannot over commit yourself by signing up for every activity. You have to make time for school work and yourself. Find a couple of activities that interest you and try them out but also, learn how to say no to avoid over commitment.

10. It will be hard.

Freshman year will be difficult, it’s your first year living on your own as an adult. This year is a learning experience, so make new friends, work hard, and most importantly, enjoy it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
