As I woke up, three weeks into the summer on June 1st, I opened my Timehop to see my graduation pictures from two years ago. First, I couldn’t believe that it’s been two years since I graduated high school. Second, it made me realize what current high school graduates are going through and all the feelings I had coming out of it. This summer is the last summer before their lives change in major ways. Some of their friends will go off to college maybe in the same state, maybe not, while other’s will be starting their first job or entering the military. However, this piece is not about what’s to come in college or the real world, but what this last summer means and the advice I have for the recent college graduates.

No matter what you decide to do this summer, make sure to spend time with your high school friends and your family. No matter what decision each person in your friend group decides to do after graduation, things are going to change. For me, my best friend moved to Ohio and goes to a school far away from the state we graduated in, while another one decided to spend a majority of the year with her family eight hours away from where we live. I chose to go to a small school in Maryland. We try to get together as much as we can now, but I wish we had spent just a little more time the summer before we all split up.

The second thing I think is all too important is to have as many home-cooked meals or food from your favorite restaurants while you’re home for the summer. With college comes interesting dining hall food and eventually you cooking for yourself in an apartment. Trust me, you may not like your mom’s food now, but you’ll be craving whatever she makes when you leave. For me, I couldn’t eat rice my whole first year of college, because I had nothing that compared to my mom’s Dominican-style rice cooked over the stove.

Finally, try to have some fun. I know that not everyone can avoid getting a summer job or running errands for your parents, but this is the last time you’ll be stress-free for the summer before you’re constantly looking for internships, more scholarships, studying for your GRE, and/or looking for jobs to pay off your student loans. If you can, do the things that you never had any time to do in high school or just simply make you happy. Re-read the Harry Potter series, go out to all the 18+ clubs in your town, visit that one place in town where you can go picnicking by yourself or with your family, because even though college gives you more freedom, it also comes with even more responsibility, and that makes it harder to do things you would do if you have more free time. When I was a high school graduate, I spent too much time worrying about how to prepare for college, and never took time to do the things I wanted to do before I left. Had I known, I definitely would’ve done more things like re-read the Harry Potter series.

High school was great, but nothing compares to college or the real world. It’s this weird balance between realizing you’re an adult and struggling with wanting to be a kid again. If there’s anything I could recommend for the recent high school graduates, it is to cherish the last summer you have in your hometown, because every summer after this one just won’t be the same.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
