An Open Letter To My Younger Brothers

You're not little kids anymore.

An Open Letter To My Younger Brothers

We’ve come a long way from the sandbox, boys. I just can’t believe how old you’ve gotten. One of you is mere days away from graduation. Long gone are the days when you would give my Barbie Dolls unwanted haircuts and we would watch every Land Before Time movie until our parents simply couldn’t take it anymore. You’ve transitioned from believing in cooties to hitting on my friends (even though you do it just to bug me, it still kills me.) To you, I’d like to leave some advice.

College is the most exciting and terrifying time in your life; this I have learned firsthand. We come from a very small pond and it can be disheartening to realize how big this ocean truly is. But I can promise you there will be people there to help you along the way. Though as your big sister I have tried to protect you, (even when you didn’t need or want to protect) I have to admit that this will be a journey you must take alone. I’m sure you are relieved that I won’t be there to lecture you or give you advice. Just know that I do it because I love you.

For my youngest brother, I leave some words of encouragement. You are going to be alone now. Though that may seem like the freedom you crave, I know that there will be times when the house will be lonely and quieter than it should be. Our house has been filled with music, laughter, and loud video games. It has seen many intense Uno games, as well as many tears and fights. I’m sorry that your brother and I will not be there with you anymore. I know you’re getting older (welcome to all the fun that comes with being a teenager) and that means you need your independence, but I know that under your budding teen angst you do enjoy spending time with us. Embrace your new freedom, and make some mistakes. If you need us, all you need to do is reach out.

You’re not my baby brothers anymore. You’ve traded in your foam swords and juice boxes for bigger and better things. I couldn’t be more proud of both of you. You are the most talented, driven, incredibly intelligent, and endlessly kind humans I have ever met, and I am lucky to be your big sister. Don’t forget to play in the rain once and awhile, because playing outside is more fun than just playing video games. Pick up a book when you’re feeling overwhelmed; sometimes the familiar characters and lands can console you when you’re feeling alone. Most importantly, don’t forget where you came from because it has made you into the men that you are today. Never forget that if you ever need your big sister, I’m just one phone call away.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
