With the start of my sophomore year of college approaching, I have been reflecting on the things I wish I would have known going into my first year. Hopefully, with the knowledge of these things, I can apply them to my second year and others can too.
1. It's okay to not understand something
Not everything is meant to be understood the first time around. It's often helpful to review any chapters or notes before and after a lecture.
2. Asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of
Your professors want to see you succeed; that's why they do what they do for a living.
3. Do not be afraid to be alone
You are constantly going to be surrounded by people at school, especially if you live on campus. Alone time comes very rarely, but it is something that you should embrace and appreciate, especially after a long week.
4. Only pack what you need
Living in a dorm can become very cramped and cluttered. If you know you won't use something on a day to day basis, do not take it with you.
5. Become close with an advisor or a professor
They only want what's best for you and at the end of the day, they will be the ones writing your recommendations and referring you to people. It's very hard to speak on someone's behalf if you know nothing about them.
6. Do not forget about your RA
They can be very helpful people and make the transition from home to a dorm very comforting.
7. Join clubs
Even ones you aren't interested in. You will meet a variety of new people and might even find a new passion.
8. Take advantage of study rooms at the library
These rooms make studying and being productive a lot more efficient.
9. Go out
You don't want to look back on your college years and only remember ever being locked up in your dorm room and the library.
10. And finally, enjoy yourself
College is hard and tedious, but you are there to pursue what you love. Wake up every day knowing that you are one step closer to your goal.
