Advice for the Second Half of the Semester

I believe we've all hit that point in the semester where everything seems hard. It's hard to wake up for classes, it's hard to stay on top of all of your assignments, it's hard to manage your time, and sometimes it's just hard to not feel like a complete failure. For all of you beaten down and discouraged students out there, here are some little things to keep in mind that will help you survive the second half of the semester.

1. Make sure to make time for yourself.

This sounds like the last thing you should be doing right? There's entirely too much to do to just sit back and give yourself a break. It may seem hard to completely relax when you know that there are certain responsibilities you're putting off, but I believe it's imperative to give yourself a break from time to time. Don't let yourself get completely run down and overwhelmed by your assignments.

2. Thanksgiving break is coming up soon, power through.

I'm sure none of you have forgotten about the blessing that is Thanksgiving break. It's time away from classes, time for good food, and time for relaxation. Knowing that this break is fast approaching can make it seem more manageable to power through some of your classes.

3. If you say you're going to do your assignment in the morning, make sure you actually do it.

I know how easy it can be to put off an assignment for so long that it seems like your only option is to do it in the morning. This is perfectly fine, if you actually do it. From shared Facebook pictures to actual admissions from friends, I know that this is a huge problem for many college students. Wake up early and do the assignment, reward yourself with a nap later in the day, problem solved.

4. Continue to go to your classes.

There have been so many mornings when I wake up and look at the alarm clock on my phone with disdain. Do I really need to get up and go to class? What would it hurt if I was gone? Don't let yourself fall victim to this way of thinking. Your main job while you're in college is to be a student; do your job well.

5. Continue to stay organized and don't forget about big, upcoming projects.

As the semester goes on it feels harder to stay on top of things. You don't want to do the readings anymore and you care less and less about the assignments. I understand, but don't let yourself fall behind and continue to stay organized. Also, don't forget about some of the huge projects the professor assigned at the beginning of the semester. It seemed so far away at one point, but now those deadlines are fast approaching.

With these tips in mind I hope you all go forth and conquer. You got this.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
