Having never lived anywhere else, I didn't think I was any different just because I'm from the northeast corner of the country, also known as New England. When I moved to Maryland for college I realized how different people are from state to state. Many of the difference include food, activities, hobbies, and, believe it or not, family values.
I will agree just as much as the next person that traveling and seeing multiple areas of the country or world is an amazing experience to broaden your horizons, however, it has also taught me one of the greatest lessons.
Upon entering college, I did my best to go in with an open mind. Trying to be less judgmental and more accepting of those around me, in hopes of new friends and positive relationships. I believe this is an important factor in any friendship or group setting. Until college, I didn't realize how people truly do all come from different backgrounds and grow up with different sets of values.
My best piece of advice to anyone is to always keep an open mind. You can learn as much by meeting new people as you can traveling. People have stories to tell and most of the time they're more than willing to tell you. So, wherever you are and wherever you go, keep an open mind when meeting others and you will learn more about the world.
