  1. Start slow: You can start as small as eating healthier once or twice a week or incorporating a workout into your routine. Walk, take the stairs more at work instead of the elevator. These little things can make an impact. Do not overdue it at first, you have to give your body time to adjust to exercising. Make the exercise more fun by adding music to keep you moving.
  2. Keep a Journal: This can vary from writing down how you feel, to what you ate or how long you exercised and what you did. Writing for me is a great way to get my emotions down on paper and to go back and reflect on the day. It helps me to sleep better at night and to have a better day.
  3. Stick to a routine: Plan out your days and when you plan to exercise. Try to exercise around the same time everyday. You can increase the amount of time you exercise as you go. I used my calendar to plan out my workouts and how long I was planning on working out. It felt good to check it off after I did it.
  4. Weigh yourself occasionally: If you weigh yourself everyday and you don’t see results, it will discourage you from wanting to keep at it. Weigh yourself every couple of weeks and you will see a change. Remember that this is a slow process don’t get discouraged when you only lose a couple of pounds, the little victories are just as important as the big ones. If you feel good, you look good!
  5. Invest in comfortable workout clothes: Working out in something that barely fits doesn’t help. I found tops and shorts that were comfortable to move in and that I felt good in. OldNavy sells a wide variety of comfortable and affordable workout clothes that I love.
  6. Schedule Rest Days: Plan out at least one or two days a week that are for resting. These are important for your muscles to be able to rest. You don’t want to get hurt. Drink plenty of water, take a warm bath or shower and rest up for the next day.
  7. Hydrate: Make sure you drink enough water while working out and while resting. Invest in a refillable cup. Drinking enough water is essential and very important.
  8. Prep your meals: Buying your food in advance and making it are important. Portion out your food and make enough for you to eat. I found that it was so much easier when my meals were done and prepared for me. I also started to cook more which added to the fun.
  9. Make an Album to track your progress: I made an album on Facebook to capture all of my milestones. It is so cool to look back to see how far you have come since you started.
  10. Support Systems are the best: Tell people what you are doing. Have people that you can talk to about what you are going through. It is important to have someone to talk to especially when it gets hard.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
