16 Life Tips From Jean-Ralphio Saperstein
Jared Eberhardt

As much as we all want to Leslie Knope or Ann Perkins or even Ron Swanson, very few of us ever achieve that level of perfection. Sometimes we aim for being Leslie, and end up being a bit more Jean-Ralphio.

Fashion superstar and all-around icon Jean-Ralphio Saperstein is known for being the ridiculous and overly confident friend of Tom Haverford on the show "Parks and Recreation." He's viewed as being quite possibly the most nonsensical character (tied only with his equally terrible yet wonderful twin sister, Mona Lisa), but his depth of character is often overlooked and disregarded. The man is simply not given enough credit.

Would Tom have ever pursued his dreams outside of a life of government work if not for Jean-Ralphio's inspirational--albeit confusing--mini-speech at the end of season 2? And would Tom have needed to keep finding new dreams if Jean-Ralphio hadn't helped him start and fail Entertainment 720 and Rent a Swag? Tom's Bistro only came to be because of the attempts and failures in Tom's life, which were all thanks to Jean-Ralphio.

It's not a bad thing to be like him. He has great hair, incredible dance moves, and despite being annoying, is also somehow endearing. The show wouldn't be what it is without him, and Tom wouldn't have found his calling without some prodding from his irresponsible, Extra™ best friend. (And who else would've taught us that you can interrupt your sentences with singing, especially when you're calling your sister the woooooorst?)

So embrace your inner Jean-Ralphio. Kick back, and absorb the insightful wisdom he has for nearly every situation in life.

1. Pay attention to very, very smart women named Kim who happen to wax you. They tend to give nuggets of wisdom before ripping your hair off.

2. The best way to make money is the old-fashioned way:

3. There's only one fool-proof beginning for a winning speech:

4. Always look out for your sister.

5. Give your friends positive feedback.

6. Respond to losing your job with maturity and dignity.

7. Support from friends is important.

8. Supporting your friends is equally important.

9. Know how to throw a party.

10. Get creative with your problem solving.

11. Always look to network and play up your strengths.

12. Don't let your friends wallow.

13. Embrace life's challenges.

14. Know how to give inspiring pep talks.

15. Turn setbacks into a financial opportunity.

16. Actively pursue possible friendships.

You can either take his advice and become exactly like Jean-Ralphio, or view him as a lecture on consequences and only become slightly like him (because let's be honest, we all have a little bit of Jean-Ralphio in us).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
