More than likely, you're sitting in that desk, complaining about a teacher thinking to yourself, "I just can't wait to get out of here." You day dream about what college is going to be like, or what new career you're going to take a chance with straight out of high school. Either way, don't take these last moments for granted.
You've already attended your last high school homecoming and you're slowly peaking up onto your last Christmas break as a high school student. College applications are making their way to the deadline and you're scrambling them all together. You're thinking to yourself, "How am I going to pay for these application fees?," "Do all of these essays make sense or have correct grammar?," or "What if I get into none of these colleges?" Use this time to treasure the satisfied feeling of turning these applications in, no matter the outcome.
You're going to encounter many activities during these last few months and you are not going to want to miss any of them. Most importantly, don't skip prom. Dances may not be your thing but, Do. Not. Miss. Prom. Prom, for some reason, leaves a lifetime of memories stored in your brain. You'll remember the amazing food, the not-so-great- DJ, the great friends, the horrific dancing, and sadly, the sweat. Either way, it would still be one of the greatest nights in your life.
Treasure every moment with your parents. If you're going off to college or joining the military, your parents are most likely going to baby you a little more and more each day. You'll start to notice your mother nagging you about each little task. She may start cutting up your food for dinner, wanting more kisses, or just begging to spend more time with you. You may start to notice your father lecture you a bit more over simple mistakes. Just remember, not only is this a stressful time for you, but a stressful time for them as well. Let them nit-pick everything you do because I swear to you, once you are gone, you'll really miss the nagging and nit-picking.
All in all, high school is terrible, but you really will want to hold on to these last few moments. As you get older, these memories will be all you have from your childhood. Don't hesitate to make friends with your teachers, they may be your last resort when it comes to recommendation letters for applications. Become involved and don't be afraid to branch out. And when you get your acceptance letter, don't hesitate to participate in a happy dance.
