As a surfer, the water and waves can teach you a lot more than you would ever imagine. Waves and life have a lot in common, sometimes you just have to look at the big picture of things. The beach is someplace we all have been to, but many are afraid of the intensity of the water. The water is harmless when you just go with the flow of the tide. Surfing can teach you a lot in life, but you have to be patient with learning, as well as be patient with yourself. Here is some advice from a surfer about how to balance life on and off the surf board.
1. Keep your head above the waves
When you feel like giving up, keep treading water and the rough waters will pass soon!
2. "Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”
This quote always reminds me to try, try again! Surfing has taught me what it means to be resilient and always get back up if you fall.
3. Never be afraid to take the biggest wave
Taking a chance can be scary but it is always fun to feel the rush of adrenaline when you take a chance and go after what you thought you couldn’t do. Sometimes it’s good to be brave and take risks!
4. Salt water heals all wounds
Salt water is the best healer, whatever the wound may be.
5. When life gives you lemons, squeeze one in your hair and go surfing
Life always has a funny way of working out, but having an optimistic attitude is the best way to deal with anything life may throw your way.
6. Waves always look bigger than they are
Often in life, we are quick to make a big deal out of small situations. Sometimes we just have to go with the flow and take it with a grain of sand.
7. Avoid pier pressure
Literally and figuratively! Every surfer knows piers are a dangerous place to surf. But in everyday life it is always good to avoid others who encourage negative thoughts and actions.
8. Always be shore of yourself
No matter what you do, do it with your whole heart! Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, you are your own person and no wave (or situation) is too big!
