I am calm until you cut me off.

Advice From Someone With Road Rage

If you are anything like me, you suffer from extreme road rage. I am a genuinely happy and calm person, until I am behind the wheel of a car. Satan possesses my soul and it is all downhill from there. It is not that I am a bad driver, everyone else just does not know what to do. Here are a few things that really grind my gears..

1. There is a tiny, little, magic stick in your car called the turn signal.

This can honestly change your life. It will actually communicate to the people behind you so that you don't get rear ended. Isn't that great? I truly am a fan.

2. If you are turning and pull off into the shoulder, GET ALL THE WAY IN THE SHOULDER.

The purpose of the shoulder is completely lost if you are only halfway in. The people still can't get around you, and you are either going to get honked at or the side of your car messed up.

3. The rules of a two lane road are very simple. Right lane is for cruising, and left is for passing. DO NOT CRUISE IN THE LEFT LANE.

I know some people feel "safer" in the left lane, but if you want to drive 10 under the speed limit, then you need to scoot yourself over to the right.

4. If there are miles of open lane behind me, do not cut me off.

I have never been able to understand why people cannot wait for three seconds to pull out. Is it really needed to cut me off and almost create a wreck?

5. There are clear lines at red light so you know where to stop. You do not have to stop a mile behind the front line.

I promise you are pissing off every single car behind you, so be prepared.

6. If it rains, you do not have to automatically go 20 under.

Slamming on your breaks with only make you slide more. Just keep calm and drive along.

7. If you are the one who is being dumb, do not pass it off on the victim.

You yelling and flipping the bird to the person you are wrecked into is not the smartest choice of your day. Neither is getting behind the wheel.

8. Four way stops may seem difficult, they aren't.

You simply pull up and see who is around you, when they are gone, you go. Honestly, it is not hard. If you wait your turn, you won't get in a wreck.

9. I know in order to get your license, you must park between the lines. So do it!

No one likes the person who can't park; especially when thats the only spot left to get. Just back up and straighten it up. It only takes a few seconds.

10. If I pass you, it is because you are going slow. I am not trying to race you.

I just don't admire the speed you have chosen. I am only trying to life my live and move on. There is no need to speed up as if it is a threat.

11. Lastly, pay attention to the road.

No text, call, song, drink, or anything in between is worth a wreck. Just put away distractions and stay safe.

So if you have road rage, you are not alone. It is only because we are good drivers. I know how powerful cars are, and I know how easy it is to have a life altering wreck. So to drivers everywhere, PLEASE abide by these things and stay safe out there.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

Or just get off the road.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
