It’s hard to believe that I’m now a college graduate and won’t be heading back to school in a few weeks.
College was an enlightening experience and as I reflect back on my past three years, there are a few tips I would like to share with incoming freshman class. While everyone’s experience will be different, here are some universal tips that will help get you through the journey.
1. Invest in a planner.
During the first couple of weeks of school take time to review your syllabus and mark down important deadlines. As you begin to sign up for clubs & organizations write down weekly meetings and event times. This will be extremely helpful that way you don’t over schedule yourself. If you aren’t big on writing things down, utilize Google Calendar, which uses the same concept but on your laptop or smart phone.
2. Get active on campus early.
There are a ton of clubs and organizations at every university. Visit the resource fair to find things that peek your interest. Clubs & organizations are a great resume builders and can help you make new friends in the process3. Call your family at least once a week or bi-weekly.
Regardless of how busy you are, make it a priority to talk to your parents and grandparents. They love you and college is an adjustment for them as well.
4. Utilize the free resources.
Every school comes with its own perks such as a career center, gym and a wellness center. Use them while you can because a portion of your tuition and fees pays for those services.5. Me time is needed.
Your schedule may seem never ending when you’re constantly accepting Google Calendar invites. While making the most of your college experience is important, you don’t want to forget to schedule in some me time. You make time for what’s important and that includes you.6. Studying is a priority.
Having a killer social life is great, but paying thousands of dollars for a class you will have to retake isn’t so great. Utilize your school’s student success center and library to get work done. To ensure you get everything done add studying to your calendar or set a daily alarm.7. Your opinion matters.
Speak up and say what’s on your mind. Your opinion can educate others and it can spark change.8. BUDGET.
Shopping adventures and late night trips to Steak and Shake can quickly empty your bank account without a budget. The lazy guide to budgeting is simple: download Mint and link your accounts.9. Find an on-campus job.
It’s a simple way to make some extra money and all on-campus jobs work with your class and study schedule. Not to mention it’s a great way to make new friends and meet administration.College is a adjustment and can take some time to getting used to, but make the most out of it. Step out of your comfort zone and make long lasting friendships. The years may go by pretty fast, but memories and experiences last forever.
