Anyone who suffers from anxiety, you are not alone. According to the American Psychology Association around 40 million Americans suffer from anxiety. I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder the end of my senior year of high school and since my life has changed. Basic activities, such as taking a test, and going to the mall became a recurring struggle. Throughout my journey, I went through ups and downs (mostly downs) that anxiety has to offer, but while doing so I have discovered some solutions that may be worth sharing with others.
When I’m feeling anxious, one approach I practice is positive thinking. Anxiety revolves around a person's mindset. I know it's hard to think positively when physical systems are overpowering your body but try. If you have a fear of driving do not think, “omg I’m at risk of getting into a car accident” but instead think “I am going to get to my destination safely.”
Another approach I do often is “taking action.” Harder said than done, I know. There are days when I feel nauseous due to an overwhelming workload. This happens often. When I feel nauseous I’m stuck deciding if I should attend class (& suffer) or not (& suffer privately in my room). Since I have had anxiety for a while I figured out that social interaction tends to keep my mind off of stress. Therefore, I go to class each time. Although it took awhile, I learned that anything that makes you anxious don't avoid! I repeat don't avoid! Avoidance, is actually detrimental to your journey and will only make you reluctant to do the task again.
Finally, gravitate towards bible scriptures. Simple and sweet. I noticed before I would turn to everyone else before I would pray to God, which is completely backwards. The key is to refer to God, the minute you start feeling anxious, to avoid a full blown panic attack.
“I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Psalm 34:4
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
“Trust in the lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”1 Peter 5:6-7
