Advice for the High School Senior

Dear Class of 2017,

Well you finally made it! You have survived years of homework, tests, and God-awful group projects. Now in less than ten months you will be walking across that stage with a diploma in hand and a bright future ahead of you. You have worked so hard for this year so savor it, but continue to work hard because your grades senior year do matter. Below is a list of advice for the amazing senior year that is ahead of you.

1. Apply for scholarships.

College is not cheap and trust me the bill will hit you like a ton of bricks. Any kind of scholarship, no matter how small, will make a difference.

2. Do your work.

As much as it is tempting to slack off, do your homework. Grades still matter your senior year even if you have already been accepted to college. A merit scholarship can and will be dropped if your grades plummet.

3. Take classes that you wouldn’t think of taking, or that class that you have always wanted to take.

Remember that ceramics class that interested you freshman year -- take it!

4. Spend time with your friends!

By this time you probably know who your true friends are, so spend as much time as you can with them before you all head off to college.

5. Participate in senior skip day.

It only happens once (or at least it's only supposed to happen once.)

6. Go to all the events that you can!

It’s your last chance for them, so embrace your inner school spirit and go to that soccer game or theater performance.

7. Go on your senior trip.

If you can afford it, go. Senior trips make memories that last a lifetime and bring you and your class closer than ever before.

8. Go to your senior prom.

Chances are you won’t be wearing a long gown again anytime soon.

9. Thank your teachers.

Seriously, no matter how much you complained, they helped you a lot and you will recognize this in college.

10. Thank your parents.

No matter how much you hate them sometimes, they have done so much for you over the course of your life. From helping at the bake sales to supporting you in all of your dreams, they have always stood beside you and supported you.

11. Thank the friends that have stuck by you through thick and thin.

They're the ones that matter.

12. Sit back and enjoy your fleeting moments in high school.

Be thankful for the opportunities you were given and look forward to what’s in store for your future.

Congratulations, class of 2017. Good luck with your final year of high school and all of your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

A college sophomore

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
