What I Want My Niece To Know As She Grows Up

Being an aunt was one of the biggest blessings I've ever gotten. The Lord knew what he was doing when he brought you into my life. While being your aunt allows me to be your best friend, it also gave me a new responsibility. There are just a few things that I want you to know.

First of all, with me as your aunt, you'll always have a friend. No matter what, I will always be in your corner. I know that I'm not home nearly as often, college kinda took me away, but just know that I love you with my whole heart and I'm only a phone call away. If at anytime you ever need a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, or advice of any kind, just remember that I'm always here.

Next, I'd like to say that I think it's precious that you want to be just like me. Every time I'm home, we have at least one conversation about how much you want to be like me. Now don't get me wrong, there are worse people to be like, but that being said I want you to find your own identity. It's humbling how much you want to be like me, but please take the time to find yourself. I'm not saying that you can't pursue the things that I did, but I don't want you to do it just because I did. Take the time to figure out what you like, and then run with it, I'll support your passions no matter what.

Lastly, I want you to know just how important it is to stay true to yourself. I told you to find your passion, it could be sports, horses, reading, science, 4-H, and the list goes on. I want you to do all of the things that genuinely make your heart happy, but once you find those things, don't let them go. Don't let the people around you steal your passion for the things that you love. Your uniqueness is what makes you, you. Don't be afraid to stand out, and stand up for what's right even if you stand alone. You have to stay true to yourself and the right people will love you just the way you are.

Promise me one thing wild child, never filter your soul to fit a mold.

-Love your forever bestfriend.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
