Wear Sunscreen, And Other Advice For Living Your Best Life

There was a spoken word song, “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen).” I have the version by Sun Tan released in 2007. In this song, there are pieces of advice on how to live a happier life and how to avoid common frustrations. If you haven’t heard it, I recommend it.

The song begins “Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '99, wear sunscreen.
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists
Whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
Than my own meandering experience, I will dispense this advice now.”

This song has given me inspiration to compile a list of advice of what I have learned in my 20 years of life.

So, I will dispense this advice now…

Don't ever apologize for being human

Go outside of your comfort zone at least once

Always hold the door for the person behind you

Think about what you say before you say it

Don't get upset about things you can't control

Accept who you are, you'll make more friends

Not everyone is going to like you

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Be spontaneous

Do what you love, and love what you do

If lipstick explodes in your dryer, use WD40 to scrub it clean

Don’t be selfish

There is no angry way to say bubbles

Be comfortable in silence

Don't be afraid to ask for help

Brush your teeth

Let the good outweigh the bad

Always give people the benefit of the doubt, you don't know what they're going through

Ask if you don’t understand

Understand that not everyone has had the same opportunities as you

You can’t help everyone

Eat Mac and Cheese with a spoon to get all the cheese

You can always tell who is losing an argument by who is yelling loudest

Smile

Storms don’t last forever

Sometimes, bad things just happen

Don't listen to what other people say about a person, find out for yourself

Growing up is optional

Appreciate everything you have before life gives you a reason to appreciate it

Be a better you, for you

Learn to lose respectfully

Never go to bed angry with someone

To memorize something, you have to encounter it 7 times

Always forgive, but never forget. Living in regret is not a good feeling.

Don’t settle for anything

The most important relationship in life is the one you have with yourself

Never accept an apology that begins with “I’m sorry, but…”

Surround yourself with good people

Get gas the day before a long trip. One less thing you’ll have to do

Laugh at yourself

Every day has the potential to be the greatest day of your life

You never know until you try

If it’s not yours, don’t touch it

Everyone needs a friend

Find a healthy way to express yourself

Let it go

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
