Starting college can be hectic and intimidating but here is some advice for incoming freshman to help them survive and thrive.
1. Hoard quarters like they are gold and you are a dragon.
2. Learn to nap anywhere and everywhere.
3. Please don’t hide in your dorm room, go out and meet people and get involved. Live your life.
4. Buy shower shoes if you live in a dorm, it could save your life.
5. Become an expert at sneaking food and utensils out of the cafeteria if you don’t want to starve to death when it is closed.
6. Do not buy your textbooks until after the first week of class, most of them you won’t need and they are way too expensive to get “just in case”. Save your money.
7. Please actually go to class and pay attention, your professors will be happier and your grades will be higher.
8. Balance work and play. Don’t burn yourself out studying 24/7 but don’t slack off either. Find a middle ground.
9. The first week of classes is usually just going over the syllabus.
10. You will appreciate all your parents did for you that now you must do yourself.
11. Step outside your comfort zone. This is the perfect time to make new friends and try new things. Learn to do things by yourself and be independent.
12. Please talk to your teachers and TA’s. Chat after class, ask them questions during office hours. You want them to remember you for references and networking.
13. It is not the end of the world if things don’t go as planned. You might fail a class or change your major part way through. That is life. Breathe and move on. Embrace the setbacks as an opportunity for change.
