The six main points of advice for choosing classes post the first semester.
After going through my entire first semester, I learned a lot about The University of Texas at Austin through an academic viewpoint.
I learned the importance of choosing the correct classes that fit your schedule and that not having a specific major is OK. Here is what I feel the six most important factors are when choosing your class schedule.
1. Rate my professor
This website became my lifeline during registration time. Not only are the ratings accurate, but the comments other students leave are critical in helping to choose classes.
2. Times are important
If morning classes motivate you to get up and start your day, then don't be afraid of 9 A.Ms. If sleeping in and having classes later in the day will work to your advantage, then do that. Do what works for you.
3. Days are more important
If not having classes on a specific day will benefit you, try to choose courses that will make it so you can take a day off. I learned from my first semester that Friday classes were not going to work for me. I made sure that for my 2nd semester I do not have any classes on Friday.
4. Ask Sophomore, Junior and Senior students about classes and get their input/advice
They have been through everything you are currently going through. They know the ins and outs better than anyone else. Their advice is truly helpful.
5. Fulfill your core requirements early
Getting core classes, like Government and History, out of the way is important. You won’t want to take these classes once you get closer to completing your major and graduating.
6. Take classes going towards your major, or potential major
Take classes that look interesting. If you are unsure of what you want to major in this can help steer you towards a certain track. On the other hand, if you are in a major, take classes to complete your requirements.
