As the life of a high school student gradually progresses, people become more and more pressured, especially with the thought of colleges approaching. With that in mind, students have to juggle jobs, extracurriculars, standardized tests, tutor and colleges, all while dealing with schoolwork from six different classes. Unfortunately, majority of the time, none of your six teachers will care whether or not you have this big interview the night your essay is due, because as a high school student, we're expected to balance out our schedules. However, it's not that easy.
In fact, sometimes these certain turn of events can cause a mental breakdown for several people. Some students in the past that I have personally known have had a mental breakdown due to the immense amount of work they have to deal with. What people don't realize is how severe the issue is. These emotional collapses in students are often caused by how insecure they are. This insecurity comes from when people compare themselves among their peers, who are supposedly smarter, talented, kinder and overall, better than themselves.
That shouldn't happen. People should realize that who they are and what they do as an individual is the most unique and amazing thing one can do. That being said, here are five helpful and sincere pieces of advice I have for high schools students who always belittle themselves.
1. Just because someone received an honor for one of the top grades in the school doesn't mean your grades aren't great.
The difference can only be by one point. You can never tell. Even if your grade is off by possibly 20 points, who knows? Maybe that person who received an honor cheated his or her way up to the top while you remained below them without having to resort to dirty methods. Even so, not having an honor won't prevent you from getting a job in the future. Not having an honor won't prevent you from raising a beautiful family. Not having an honor won't prevent you from living your life. It is merely an honor that makes you feel proud for a temporarily short amount of time.
2. Whether or not you had the most leadership positions in high school doesn't make much difference in the long run.
It's true. Like I said previously, so what if you were or weren't the president of a club? It's not like it is going to impact your life. Of course, a leadership position teaches you the responsibilities and the actions one must take as a leader, but eventually, everyone learns this as they go along their life. It just so happens that these leadership positions are merely a way to learn these techniques faster. Who cares if you only have one or maybe even none? You still have time to learn these things. Knowledge is always unlimited.

3. There are so many options in this vast world. If you're not doing so great on a subject, it doesn't really make a difference.
Of course, grades do matter when colleges are looking at your application. But to be honest, if you're studying biology and you're horribly failing, most likely you won't even need to know anything about biology if you're planning on majoring in accounting in the future. Some subjects we learn in school aren't cut out for us.
There are always those people who appear to excel at everything, which is great for them, but does it make a difference to envy them? Not really. In fact, their decision on what to major in might be more difficult, because these people may not know which major they are truly interested in.
4. This doesn't always seem to make sense a majority of the time, but things will always get better. Trust me.
Don't continue to belittle yourself. You can always get through each hardship. In fact, there was one time when I believed that nothing would get better in my life. But I waited it out. I kept on telling myself that it would get better in the end. This may not be advice specifically towards high schoolers who belittle themselves, but almost every single scenario that comes to my head causes me to tell myself that everything will get better, not matter what the circumstances are.

5. You are you, and that's the most perfect high school student anyone can ever be.
Some students change themselves in order to morph into a perfect human being. However, they aren't perfect. They're fake. When people belittle themselves, they often compare themselves with other high school students grade-wise, athletics-wise or even extracurricular-wise.
It all depends on each and every high school student. But I believe that every single human being in this world was born to do something. So yes, if high school is currently rough, it'll take time for you to get through it. But in the end, being yourself and staying true to yourself is one reason why you should not belittle yourself. Each and every person is destined to do something amazing. You may or may not know what is going to happen in high school, but it will definitely meet you in the future.
