Advertisers are constantly selling people dreams to convince us that their product will somehow change their life if they buy it. However, in reality, we know that the p90x workout packet will not always work in achieving the weight loss desired. The advertisers only show the good and the glory about whatever they are selling. They do not show in the advertisement on TV how the p90x is a constant struggle and takes actual dedication to lose the weight. The advertisers purposely choose fit people to represent their product and manipulate the consumers to thinking it will be a quick and simple process if they use the p90x to lose weight. Us consumers are only seeing the television side, where everything seems great.
Often times the advertisers sell us on the idea based off of a bigger picture, with a common theme that unites us all as one. In any commercial related to joining the army, it will always relate back to representing our country, and the idea that they will become a hero if they go to war. This fantasy of becoming a hero is often times untrue as soldiers are even lucky if they survive from war, let alone the traumatic effects of post-war. Advertisers only show the positive perspective of war, manipulating the people that war is not so bad.
This capitalist society that we live in is so focused on selling dreams to generate profit rather than to just fight for the good of the country. They paint this picture that everyone is fighting for America and the greater good, however war is more a business than a fight for justice.
The advertiser's sole purpose is to make the consumers rational mind think irrationally to buy into whatever it is they are selling. These deceptive advertisements target the children and youths of society, as they tend to believe everything they see. They corrupt the minds of children into believing that if they do a certain thing then a certain outcome will happen. The unethical techniques are used just to make profits. The advertisers in the cigarette commercials are trying to deceive people into making it appealing to smoke even though it can be extremely detrimental to their health. If the advertisers told both perspectives then people would not want to buy their product and thus make less profit.
These advertisements constantly manipulate and exaggerate all in the efforts to sell their product and gain more profit. Similar to the concept of “Business is War,” both are merely deceiving and manipulating to maximize profit. Advertisers could easily be more ethical if they gave both perspectives with their product, and not simply out to deceive consumers to gain profit.
