Advantages And Disadvantages Of Not Having A Car At University

You know those days when you just want to go out for a drive to relieve all the stresses that come with being a college student? Yeah I don’t either … why? Well I don’t have a car so I wouldn’t know. I imagine that it is quite nice not having to rely on other people to take you where you want to go when you want to go.

I don’t know about you but my life is so much easier when I can do things on my own I mean isn’t that what university is all about -- learning how to be independent? And I can’t be independent if I am constantly asking all of my friends to take me where I need to go. Shockingly I actually miss those grocery store runs for my parents!

Another reason not having a car kind of sucks is because not only do I have to rely on other people, I have to consider that they might not always have the time to give me a ride when I need it. The only way I am guaranteed to be able to go anywhere at a specific time is if I had my own car. I would not have to consider anyone else’s availability if I had the ability to drive myself.

There are disadvantages to not having a car in university but there are also advantages. Not having to pay for a parking sticker is a pretty good one considering they are expensive so that is definitely a plus. Also, during football season I never have to worry about moving my car out of the parking garages because I don’t have a car to move. I notice that a lot of my friends hate game days because of that reason, I mean who wants to park all the way across campus and then have to walk back to their dorm?

Parking in general can be a hassle as well considering that there are so many students and so many places to park. And if it just so happens that it is pouring rain and you had to go somewhere and you parked all the way on the other side of campus, you would be one unhappy college student, am I right? Well I don’t know; I don’t have a car remember?

Another thing that is pretty nice about not having a car more generally speaking is that I don’t have to pay for gas, get a car wash, or worry about anything happening to the car that I might have to pay for such as it breaking down, a flat tire, or anything of that sort.

Although having a car might be nice, I don’t mind all the extra walking that I get from not having a car. I also don’t mind not paying for gas or worrying about car troubles. However, it is nice being able to drive whenever you want and run errands whenever you want with your own car, so I’ve heard anyways … because you know I don’t have a car so I wouldn’t know. On the bright side maybe my parents are reading this and I’ll have a car in no time!

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

Great Value Colleges

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.
