Adulting 101

Adulthood can be like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane.

When we were little all we wanted to do was grow up. Now that we are, it seems like it sucks 99.9% of the time. Being an adult has such a negative stigma, but with some simple tips to remember, it doesn’t have to be so bad.

1. Reminders

Sticky notes. Phone calendars. Alarms. There are so many ways to keep tabs on all of your appointments, bills, and deadlines! It’s helpful to write everything down because it strengthens your memory, and you’ll also see it around for a constant reminder.

2. Prioritize.

I know it seems like you really need that new pair of MK shoes right now, but saving now means that later you won’t have to stress as much and can have extra money for fun things. Plan out how much money you need for bills, food, and gas. Put it aside, that way you know how much you can spend on other things. It feels much better then the panic of returning clothes you bought to pay your bills!

3. Keep your loved ones close.

Just because you’re an adult now doesn’t mean you need people any less. Stay close to your family and friends. Trust me, this whole adult is thing so much more enjoyable with people by your side.

4. Let loose & have fun.

Why put in all of this hard work if you can’t have any fun? Being an adult doesn’t have to be all work. Without curfews and rules, you can have more spontaneous fun. Go out until 2am on school nights. Laugh until your stomach hurts. Miss one day of work for a beach trip. Make memories. It’s the small moments that make all the difference. Don’t be so stressed over small things; you’ll age faster that way!

5. Be open-minded.

Things often don’t work out as planned. That’s life. Knowing this and being more flexible can make things feel less stressful when plans change. Believe that everything happens for a reason, and even when it feels like you’re going the wrong direction, you could be headed to an even better destination.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
