What Is Adulting?
Thought Catalog

Adulting is hard. As we millennials go through our adult-escence, we learn and grow in ways we never thought possible. But we also find out very quickly that adulting ... well, it sucks. Here are ways adulting is described by various people in their young adult years.

1. "Adulting is equal parts pretending that you know what you're doing and having way too much fun grocery shopping because you can buy wine and sushi and Star Wars graham crackers and no one can stop you." - Danielle

2. "Millennials adulting is like being a werewolf. You work during the day like a normal person, and by night when the moon is full, you transform into a child, binge watch episodes of Power Rangers, and gorge on Fruit by the Foot." - Mike

3. "What is adulting? Adulting is what anything else is really...dank memes."

4. "Adulting? Uh. It's embracing your childhood even more so than when you were a child." - Anonymous

5. "Adulting is honestly the time in your life where you have nothing figured out, but the world just says, 'too bad, figure it out,' because you're supposed to have everything figured out." - Triana

6. "Hard as f***!" - Josh

7. "Hmmm... I'd say that adulting is the art of looking like you know what you're doing whilst having little to no clue about what you really *are* doing, and being at least semi-convincing about it."

8. "It's pretty much acting like you're together 10% of the time, and having some sort of secret breakdown 90% of the time." - Anonymous

9. "Adulting is the art of taking responsibility for your own success and well-being while still acknowledging your limitations and the wisdom of others." - Sarah

10. "Right now, adulting feels like working all the time while trying to drink water and use coconut oil to fix all of your problems." - ME

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
