Adopt A Cat In College

The secret to surviving college is becoming a proud cat parent

Adopt A Cat In College

There is only so much ice cream, hours of Netflix, and retail therapy that can make the exhaustion of college bearable. It can get overwhelming having to keep up your social calendar of thirsty Thursdays, mixers, fam dinners, and concerts on top of the academic stress that comes with midterms week being every week, and maintaining a part time job. When eating ice cream, binge watching Netflix, and online shopping doesn’t quite cut it, I have the best piece of advice for surviving college and young adulthood: adopt a cat.

Adopting Cali is one of the best decisions I have made during college. She is the only one who knows the way to cure feeling worthless is an hour of snuggles and the way to celebrate landing a co-op is dancing around the room. She has taught me life lessons from what responsibility truly looks like to the importance of not taking anyone’s shit.

If I can’t persuade you, here are 10 reasons why having your own cat to love is the best decision you can make.

“It’s easier to know what boys are worth your time or not. If you bring them home and they play with her and she loves them, then you’re good to go.” Veronica.

“They sleep all day like I wish I could.” Karen.

“I love my cat because he is a member of the family and is there for me during times of snuggle and struggle.” Dan

“My little nugget is absolutely psychotic, but I can’t help but always focus on how cute she is as she’s climbing up the curtains. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than when she comes to greet me at the door when I get home and meows like she’s talking to me. I consider her so much like my child, it’s almost concerning.” Gabby.

“His hungry meow and he’s a Pisces, so he gets me.” Austin.

“My cat is always down to nap with me and he’s a great listener. Another bonus is that the ladies love him.” Sean.

“She follows me into the bathroom for moral support.” Kelly.

“He has equal disdain for the general public and is a great stress relief during exams.” Derrick.

“I love my cat because there is no better, fluffy, little face to return home to than hers! Hearing her bell jingle as she races to the front door, no matter how good or bad my day was, makes me smile every time.” Kerri.

“Logan is a badass who does not listen to what anyone says and slaps me on a daily basis- she owns, I do not own her. Also, her selfie game is so strong she’s #flawless. She's so fluffy, I'm gonna die.” Amanda.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
