Acupuncture: An Alternative Prescription

Alternative medicine works.

Acupuncture has been around for many years. But not many health insurances consider acupuncture to be medicine. It’s an amazing Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that uses needles inserted into the body. It has been helpful and beneficial for many and definitely for me.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to respond to natural healing and improve the body function and circulation as it should be. It helps make the blood circulate in the body. There are so many health conditions acupuncture can treat:

Musculoskeletal: neck, shoulder, frozen shoulder, elbow, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, wrist elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, back, hip, knee, ankle, herniated disc, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis pain, fibromyalgia, sprains/strains, work, and sports-related injuries

Digestive: abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, constipation, IBS, and acid reflux

Emotional: Insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress

Gynecological: Infertility, PMS, Irregular menstruation, and menopause symptoms

Neurological: headache, migraine, neuralgia, facial pain, stroke, rehabilitation, and post-operative pain

Respiratory: Allergy, asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis, and common cold

Urological: Urinary tract infection (UTI) and Sexual Dysfunction

Other conditions and benefits: increased energy vitals, regulates blood pressure and blood chemistry, stabilizes immune system, detox, weight loss, hormonal balance, addiction (alcohol, drug, smoking), morning sickness, chemotherapy-related nausea, vomiting, and the list goes on

I love to use natural medicine for my body. A few years ago, more like seven years ago give or take, I sustained a back injury. It changed my body in so many ways. My body was 100 percent before the injury. I felt things in places I didn’t feel before and I suffered from major migraines. It was just horrible. I had so many doctors and appointments. Many ailments came and I saw doctor after doctor and prescription after prescription. The prescriptions worked amazing at the beginning of treatment, but after awhile, they didn’t.

I became worried about my internal body when I gained knowledge that the painkillers would eventually hurt my liver and my kidneys. That led me to research other types of pain relief methods. When I was receiving care from my doctors, they sent me to an acupuncturist. I had suggested the treatment and the doctors approved it. I was scared, but with all the pain I was in, I was open to anything as long as it wouldn’t kill me.

I have health insurance and for years they would not pay for alternative medicine acupuncture. It would make me feel sad because it was the only relief my body had. For years I have been paying out of pocket until I couldn’t anymore.

All I could do is pray that one day my health insurance would come around.

One day at work there was a doctor in the break room. To be honest I had no idea why he was there. I was too busy to pay attention to the posters that were in the warehouse letting me know our health insurance is now paying for acupuncture. What?!

I was running out on my break to McDonalds. I saw the doctor walking so I stopped him and started to ask him questions. He made my appointment on the spot for Saturday. Yay! Filled with excitement, I couldn’t wait for my body to feel good.

Saturday meant it was time for my appointment. Dr. Yeung took down some information about me, then asked me to stick out my tongue. I thought it was so weird but I did it. After the initial interview, I was told to undress, put the gown on, and let him know when I was ready.

The doctor came in and started to add needles to my back, legs, and neck. He then added electric shock therapy. This machine sends an electric current through my body. Aw, it felt so amazing. I didn’t want it to stop. The needles were in for about 20 minutes. An alarm started to ring and it was time for the needles to come out. Aw boo (Laughing).

After the needles were out, Dr. Y started to rub this nice smelling Chinese aroma oil on my back. Then he added a hot flame of cupping and rubbed out my back with the cup and it feels so good. After he rubbed it out Dr. Y started the flame again and he put the cups all over my back, legs, neck, and arms. The cupping helps remove toxins from the body and adds energy support to the parts of the body in need or suffering from circulation. It’s amazing.

I recommend acupuncture and cupping for everyone. To find out if they take your insurance or if it will be out of pocket cost, call Elim Acupuncture Group (800) 385-1130. They have many locations.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
