What You ACTUALLY Need To Pack For College: Clothes Edition

When I first saw the size of the closet that I would have in my Freshman year dorm, I had literally no idea how I was going to make all of my clothes and shoes fit inside of it. I'm that girl who brings a rolling suitcase, a duffle bag, and a u-Haul for a two-night trip. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, but not by much. However, after living in a dorm room with a closet approximately the size of a children's shoe box, I have come to the conclusion that there were quite a few things on those "Essential College Packing Lists" that weren't so, well, essential. So, in an attempt to save some of you incoming college freshmen some time and space, I have created a list of clothes/shoes and related items that you are actually going to need (as well as a few things you aren't going to need).

So, here it goes:

What NOT to pack...

  • More than a few t-shirts. Whether you're joining a Greek organization or not, you will get dozens of t-shirts within your first semester. Save yourself space and only pack a couple of your favorite ones, because you won't end up wearing them anyway.
  • Every pair of shoes you own. Enough said.
  • A ridiculous amount of pajamas. Bring a couple of pairs of cute pajama pants, but other than that, you're going to end up sleeping in t-shirts and shorts.
  • More than a couple of purses. Odds are, you aren't going to carry a purse to class every day and you aren't going to lug a huge tote with you when you go out. Pick a couple of your favorite bags and a clutch or two and leave the rest at home. You can always switch them out the next time you're at home if you get bored with them.

What you NEED to pack...

  • Interview appropriate outfits for both business and business casual interviews. You'd be surprised at how many organizations require you to dress nice for an interview, and you want to look professional.
  • Game - day colors. My best advice is to have a few staple pieces that you can switch out from week to week so you're not trying to buy a new dress every two weeks.
  • Jewelry. Even if you aren't a huge jewelry person, this is something that won't take up a ton of space so you can bring as much of it as you want. Pick up one of those hanging jewelry organizers for your closet, and you'll be set.
  • The same thing goes for scarves.
  • The obvious - comfy class clothes! Leggings, Nike shorts, yeah, you get the idea.
  • Okay, now onto shoes: Sandals don't take up a ton of space, so they can be stored easily. Rain boots will be your best friend. No, you don't need to bring seven pairs of stilettos and a billion pairs of wedges.

When you're packing, if you haven't worn it in the last six months, you probably won't wear it in the next six. Switch out seasonal clothing. Felt hangers are your best friend.

Good luck packing for college and may the size of your dorm room closet be ever in your favor.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
