The Devastating Effect Of School Shootings on College Campuses

This is a sign from a college university campus that read, "ACTIVE SHOOTER RESPONSE."

Learn how to survive a shooting event.

When did classrooms stop being sanctuary spaces? The answer is, a long time ago. Beginning with Columbine and ending with Parkland, schools are not safe spaces anymore. It is a privilege to see one's parents after a long day of school. It is a privilege to come back to bed in one piece.

When did waking up and sleeping that night become a privilege?

It's quite heartbreaking. Not too long ago, there was a shooting in Thousand Oaks, CA. Many of those injured were students attending Pepperdine University.

Although it is appreciable that universities are taking more efforts to keep students safe, it is absolutely horrible that this is an era where children need to learn how to hide in closets and teenagers need to wear clear backpacks.

This is an era where people need to know what to do.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
