I’m sure you have heard the overused expression, actions speak louder than words.
Although you might have heard it since kindergarten and it seems very overused, it’s one of the most powerful and true expressions I know and it is crucial for everyone to learn from this phrase.
A time this phrase might have applied to you was when it was a big deal when your significant other first said the words “I love you." But shouldn’t the bigger deal be something he or she did? Your first hug. Your first kiss. The first time you held hands. The first present he or she gave you. These are what should mean something to you. Because you know they can be nothing but honest. Instead of him or her saying a few words that supposedly should change your world, what should be important is what he or she does. I love you is really just eight letters and three combinations of them; making a phrase. Anyone can say it. But meaning is something else.
Here is a poem I wrote further explaining my thoughts:
Eight letters three words say them and I am yours.
The alphabet: 26 letters.
26 letters that dictate our lives.
26 letters that make you want to curl up in a ball and disappear
26 letters that dig a hole so deep and push you in it so far that you can never get up
26 letters that lead you to run away into the sunset and live happily ever after
26 letters that make you feel like the worst person on earth
26 letters that make you feel like you are the best person on earth
26 letters that turn your life upside down
26 letters that change you
26 letters that make you hate someone with all your heart
26 letters that make you love someone with all your heart
26 letters that can change how someone sees you
Why do we let these tiny letters created centuries ago, make such an imprint on our lives?
Because that is how society created them to be
We created words to mean the world to us
To be our savior
Our knight
Our villain
Our love
In reality, it is what you do that matters, not what you say
Because after all, they are just 26 letters
But actions are what should dictate our life
Another poem that expands on this is as follows:
Actions speak louder than words
It’s funny how the people who say I will always be there for you never are
but the people who never say it
always are.
Maybe its because when someone is there for you it means they
understand what you went through
are going through
and what you will go through.
If someone is truly your friend, you will never need to say
I will always be there for you,
because you will always know it
Deep in your heart you know the truth
And no words can explain that truth
Only actions
To sum it all up, the next time you want to say something that is supposed to mean the world to someone, complete an action instead. For example, instead of telling your friends great job at the end of their performance, give them flowers. Take them out to dinner. I’m sure that will feel a lot better than just a few letters arranged to make a statement.
