Are You Accidentally Adulting?

Are you becoming an adult without even realizing it? A lot of people grow into themselves and learn what it means to be an adult during their time in college or if not in college, in their 20s. Oftentimes, however, we do not realize just how much we are actually doing to take care of ourselves as young adults. Every little thing counts when it comes to taking care of yourself. So, you're probably more on top of things than you give yourself credit for. Here's a collection of adult-like things you might be doing without even realizing it.

1. You eat a complete breakfast.

Eating healthy foods in general is a great start to taking care of one's self. However, breakfast, as they say, is the most important meal of the day. Starting your day with a fresh, healthy meal can make for an easygoing, calming morning. Eating breakfast gives you energy for the day ahead and can help one's concentration. A quick Google search can tell you all the benefits of breakfast, but here is a good place to start.

2. You attend meetings.

Whoa there, big shot! Looks like someone has some important things to discuss! Attending meetings, big and small, is a good sign you are participating in a professional side of life. Maybe you're off to a work meeting or perhaps you are volunteering and need to attend meetings leading up to an event of some sort. Whatever your story, you're penciling meetings into your busy schedule and making time for important aspects of life such as your job or community.

3. You go on scheduled coffee dates.

Prioritizing is serious business in your 20s, so making time for friends is important. Adding a few coffee dates to your agenda here and there is a sign that you've got a schedule and some organizational skills. Not only are you putting yourself out there to socialize, you are making time for people who are important to you. You go!

4. You call your parents just because.

Let's face it, sometimes you need to talk something out with your mom or dad. Remember, they have been living in this crazy world longer than you have and might have some enlightening words of wisdom for you. Asking for help or advice is a sign of maturity, not weakness. Whether it be about school, friends, relationships or all of the above, chances are your parents have been there and done that. Give 'em a call here and there to see what you can learn from them; their advice may surprise you!

5. You make your bed each morning.

Most of our mornings are tight but taking a moment to make your bed before leaving the house can actually lead to better health, happiness and cleanliness. Not only does your room look more presentable, it can give one a sense of accomplishment in the morning, which can lower stress. Making your bed can keep dust from building up in your sheets, which is especially important to people with allergies. Essays could be published on this subject but here's a link to convince you to make your bed if you're not already doing so. If you are already making your bed, check it out! You're living a clean, positive lifestyle, my friend.

6. You wake up at the same time every day.

Talk about being on time. If you're an early bird, you've got more time during the day than others to be productive. When you wake up at the same time each day you are getting your body used to a daily routine.

7. You sweep, vacuum, maybe dust.

Are you cleaning your bathroom? Sweeping your kitchen? Dusting your shelves? Sounds like you've taken some initiative and are well on your way to becoming a cleanly adult. Keeping your home or apartment clean is very important to one's own health. If you have allergies, dust. If you notice your room is stuffy, vacuum your carpet and crack a window for some fresh air. Take care of yourself by taking care of your place of residence.

8. You do your own laundry.

Maybe you're not as into laundry as Sheldon is, but if you know how to operate a washer and dryer then you're well on your way to being an independent human. Depending on your parents, to do your laundry is no good. You should know your clothes needs best and have a good idea of when you need to wash things such as your bedsheets or pillows. If you're doing your own laundry, way to have it together!

9. You get your own invitations to weddings.

Don't panic, all your friends and family members are simply tying their lives to others and committing to married life. No big deal, right? OK, maybe that sounds intimidating, but it's our culture's way of life, and you will probably encounter many a wedding in your young adult years. Embrace the party and don't worry too much if you're nowhere near planning your own wedding. You're supporting your loved ones by attending their big day, which is a sign of friendship. Way to be supportive! Your newlywed friends thank you, even if you have yet to receive that obligatory thank you card!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.
