"Can you guys do a riff off?"
If I hear this question one more time I feel like I am going to EXPLODE.
I understand that the famous feature film "Pitch Perfect" is a cinematic masterpiece, but do not correlate the entire movie with being in an actual acapella group. The only thing that we actually do that is similar is sing. That is about it.
My acapella group meets every Monday and Wednesday night from 7:30-9:30 to rehearse and practice our songs. We put a lot of our own personal time and effort into ultimately creating beautiful music. A lot of people don't understand that we have our own song arrangements and that we can't just come up with the background sounds and discover the inner workings of a song without any practice or sheet music. "Pitch Perfect" makes it seem as if we can just come up with anything at the drop of a pin. They also put one practice scene that was a total of maybe 5 minutes and they made it into some comical movie montage.
"Pitch Perfect" is also known for its rivalries between all girls and all boys group.
Here at my college, we are quite the opposite. There is no rivalry between the three groups here on campus. Instead, we actually support one another and encourage others to attend each other's events. I think it is great that there is no rivalry between groups as it would then be messy and loaded with drama which I personally am not here for the drama.
The one thing that "Pitch Perfect" got right was the close bonds that one makes with each member of the group. I have never felt like I have been a part of a group that I feel extremely close with every single member and the group as a whole. Sure sometimes we have our ups and downs, but we always get through it.
So its safe to say "Pitch Perfect" is an incredible film, but it is nothing like being in an actual acapella group.
