"One day, you’re 17 and you’re planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.” Brooke Davis"One Tree Hill" has always been my favorite television show for as long as I can remember. My love for it grew even stronger when I came across this line freshmen year of high school. As soon as I heard it, I knew that this was a quote that was going to stick with me for quite some time. Heck, I even knew right then and there that this was going to be my yearbook quote and, coincidentally, someone else knew it would be theirs too.
The quote really made me think about what I was doing and where I was in life. It takes me back to my senior year of high school when all the end of the year events prior to graduation were happening. I thought back to the time I first heard that quote and how my years of high school actually flew right past my eyes. Some of the thoughts I had were, Could I have done things better? Did I enjoy it as much as I could've? Did I take advantage of all the opportunities I was given? and Did I spend my time wisely? These thoughts continued to race around my head as I started to think that maybe I didn't spend my time as wisely as I should've.
Looking back, there are actually a ton of things that I wish I could change. I didn't realize how precious time actually was. Four months ago, I was so excited to begin summer break, be able to make plans and do all the things I wanted to do during the school year and now it is now August and all I can think to myself is, Where did the time go? The beauty that lies beneath the "One Tree Hill" quote is that it emphasizes the importance of time, which is something a plethora of people fail to recognize. Some may argue that time is infinite regardless of what the situation may be but others can argue that although it may seem infinite, time is limited and time is taken for granted.
You can talk about something a ton of times without truly understanding its meaning. For example, my understanding of proofs in my 10th-grade geometry class did not get better the more I spoke about it. It actually got worse -- if that's possible. This is the same situation when it comes to time. Time is spoken about in many different ways throughout the day, whether it is someone asking what the time is, when someone will have time to hang out, or my favorite question: What time will dinner be ready? Because it is said so often and loosely, many people fail to realize that as long as a period of time can be, it can equally be just as short.
Time knows no bounds and time stops for absolutely no one, unless you're Adam Sandler starring in the movie "Click." Aside from that one in seven billion chance, it's safe to say that many people do struggle with the concept of understanding time. So what is it exactly?
Time is the most precious gift to give and to receive. It is said to be everlasting and has no beginning or an end but we are able to measure it using seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years and even decades. We also measure it using words such as past, present, and future. It is measurable as well as immeasurable. Time is always changing. It is the ultimate measure of our lives. It begins with birth, then growth and lastly, death. Life is a fixed time frame and we are all living in it.
When you give someone time out of your day, you are giving them a portion of your life that you can never get back. Although we can never get back events of yesterday, time does, however, allow us to be able to change the kind of person we are and hope to be some day. It allows us to change our perspectives on certain things as well as make amends with those who have done wrong to us. Since time is precious it is the best to make every day a great one because you never know what day will be your last. You don't know what tomorrow holds.. you don't know IF there is a tomorrow. You only know of today and can hope to be able to see a tomorrow. Instead of waiting around for a moment to be great, take the moment and make it great because you are the writer of your own story and time will allow you to do as much as you can to make that story as great as it can be.
At the end of the day, it will always be about time. And it's about time people start to realize that our time period is a gift -- after all, we do live in the present, right?
