There is a seven letter word that many people fear. Don’t attempt to deny it! You know it’s true. We spend most of our lives avoiding this reality, but there will come a time to face the music. There will come a time to behave like the adult we’re expected to be. We must be prepared for it or we will definitely come to regret it later. I am, of course, talking about college.
Yes, Marty. College is the seven letter word! I counted four times just to make sure.
All jokes aside, the fall semester of 2016 has almost arrived and unfortunately we have to set aside some time from our fun summer activities to get ready for our new classes. I’m not talking about supplies, though those are important. You’re gonna need those pens to take those hardcore illegible notes. No, I’m talking about that financial aid (which is the only phrase that freaks me out more than the word “college”.
It'll be okay, Marty! Whether you are an incoming freshman, a senior with only one more semester to go, or a hardworking graduate student, having financial aid is essential in order to take those classes in the first place! Unless you’re one of those rare people who can just pay off their tuition. In which case, I do not want to hear anything about it. I’m glad you’re able to do so, don’t get me wrong! But...for my sanity, just don’t mention it.
It'll be okay, Marty. If you’re a less fortunate person such as I, you have to make up for it somehow. Whether it be from scholarships, grants, or loans. You have to pay for your degree in some way. Tuition alone at my university is a bit over four thousand. Let me tell you, that is a LOT of ramen noodles. But don’t start worrying about being in student debt! There are many ways to get that funding without stressing on how to pay it back.
I am of course going to mention the FAFSA. It’s more or less a necessity for every college student now. It offers grants, federal workstudies, and more based on your and/or your family’s income. And it’s free! ALWAYS take advantage of free things.
But I’m going to also give you some advice that has really helped me out!
First, you should definitely take advantage of any and all opportunities, no matter the odds against you. There’s always a chance you might just get that scholarship that thousands of people are applying for.
Secondly, never throw college recruitment mail away. Sometimes universities will send out scholarship information that will benefit you. Even if it’s from a school you don’t plan on attending, you might be able to use it somewhere else.
Lastly, the most important thing is not to procrastinate! The sooner you get everything taken care of, the sooner you can enjoy the rest of your summer. Enjoy it while you can. Soon, we’ll all have to work for a living.
