After stumbling upon her entire album on Spotify, I have unofficially sworn in as a Meghan Trainor fan and I encourage you to do so, too. This confident, inspiring, talented superstar has come under fire for sexist lyrics, degrading skinny body types and cliche songs. Nothing could be farther from the truth. She is more than just the phenomenal and whether you want to meditate on her greatness or you still need proof she's amazing, look no further.
Her Songs Are Confidence Boosting Superheroes
Meghan just loves to write songs encouraging everyone to love themselves. The song "I Love Me", unsurprisingly, is particularly great at boosting self love. I've been playing it on repeat for the last few days (just ask my friends). My mom knows to call me over to the radio when "Me Too" comes on because it has quickly gone from another cool song, to my jam. For back up on my claims of inspirational grandeur, I've brought along some of Meghan's lyrics for proof.
"I love me, I love me, I don't know about you, I love me" - I Love Me
"If I was you I'd wanna be me too" - Me Too
"If you got beauty beauty just raise 'em up
'Cause every inch of you is perfect
From the bottom to the top" - All About That Bass
Feel inspired, yet? Yeah, Me Too.
She's a Brilliant Song Writer
A lot of people can sing, but not a lot of people actually write the stuff they sing. I get it, not everyone is meant to be a writer, and not everyone wants to sing, but something about a person that can do both gives me goosebumps.
Meghan not only writes her songs, but has also written hit songs for stars like Fifth Harmony and Jennifer Lopez. She even offered her hit "All About That Bass" to Beyonce! Did the Queen take the bait? No, but I'm sure Meghan regrets nothing.
She Spreads Body Positivity
Meghan doesn't just sing, she practices what she preaches. I've never once seen her hide the curves and bass she sings about so proudly, and why should she? She's gorgeous and more importantly, she knows it. She wears what she wants and looks absolutely amazing in it and she isn't trying to change herself for anyone. Not for an industry that typically loves thinner women, not for anyone.
She Doesn't Mind The Haters
Nothing is more inspiring than having pretty vocal haters and continuing to do your thing anyways. I've seen tweet, after article after Facebook rant proclaiming her songs to be annoying and discriminating of skinny body types (I don't think that was her goal), but does she quit? No. Does she flinch? Of course not. She's Meghan.
Even more than that, she's someone who has quite obviously found a way to believe in herself, her goals, her music and her dreams. That liberation is evident all over her sparkly face. Sparkle on, Meghan, sparkle on.
At First I Didn't Like Her That Much
I'll be the first to admit that I didn't jump on the Meghan train all that fast. Sorry Meghan, but even as I was shaking my hips to "All About That Bass", I was wondering if you would continue to deliver such a caliber of music. When "Dear Future Husband" came out, I cried out that it was sexist, too!
I usually wait a little before claiming to be a band or performers biggest fan and it takes more than just one song to make a believer out of me. Before I could go forth and spread the greatness of Meghan, I had to ask myself some serious questions. Do she have a good message? Does she consistently make me come back for more? Does her music make me a better person? For the majority of Meghan's music, I've got to say yes, yes and yes. For all that and more I'll be jamming to her retro beats all summer long and so should you.
