About My Godmother
Kayla Giraud

As many people know, I have quite a large family. I've been blessed with the best cousins, aunts and uncles. One of these aunts happens to be my godmother, and I'm so so proud to be able to say that.

Despite the trials she has, she never complains, she never fails to worry about everyone else and worry about making them happy. She has a heart of gold I’ve seen in very few people.

I don't know what I would do without her constant text messages saying how much she loves me and to have a great day, or the fact that she listens and pays attention to everything I say, even when no one else does. There's never been a time she's steered me in the wrong direction or failed to surprise me.

My aunt is an extraordinary woman. I’m very thankful to have as another mom for me. Truthfully, I don't think I could put into words what she means to me. My aunt has taught me what it means to be a fighter.

She has taught me what it means to be brave. She fought cancer and beat it. I know my aunt is a survivor. She is one of the strongest people I have ever met. Her strength, determination and positive demeanor are inspiring. She has had such an impact on so many people’s lives, including my own. I only wish I was able to do half of doing the things she does.

She is beyond amazing in every way with her generosity, thoughtfulness and talents she continues to use to help other people.

She taught me what it means to have faith and she taught what it means to not give up. My aunt has never given up. She's my hero and if I have inherited any kind of trait from her at all, then I know I'm a better person because of it.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
