What The Movie "About Time" Really Wants You To Know

The bitter-sweet and romantic comedy will have you ready to grab your tissues and put a knot in your throat. But most of all, it will make your heart ache for your own life, when you realize you've got it all wrong. "About Time" is about a young man, Tim, who learns the men in his family can travel back in time. His life after having learned of his ability, completely changes his perspectives on how to live life. Here are five things that "About Time" teaches you.

There truly are no second chances.

Sometimes it can be a harsh reality that you absolutely can never change the past. You don't get three wishes, no do-overs, and no time traveling. Accepting life for what it is can actually be liberating. You will learn to find the good in everything that is seemingly bad.

In the movie, Tim is full of regrets. He goes back in time to fix the situations, only to learn upon his return that he regrets ever changing it. Since time-travel is not yet figured out in the modern world, we just have to "...live each day like you have deliberately gone back to this day to do it over." - Tim

Live today like you only get one chance.

Well, quite literally, you only get one chance at today. You have the ability to make every single day as positive or as negative as you choose. While you obviously can't control every instance, you can control how it affects you. Don't waste your time fretting about what you can't change. Use this time to make the day count for something good.

Fortunately in the movie, Tim's time traveling can change things he wishes didn't happen. However, this backfires as it changes positive things along with it. Moments are forever the way that they are, no more and no less.

Cherish your parents and guardians.

I think this is one of the most important things that I took from this movie. There is no avoiding the time in your life when your closest family members are no longer here with you. They are however, here right now. Tell them you love them, hug and kiss them, and make sure they know you appreciate them.

We can't all be like Tim and have about three "last moments" with our father before his funeral. So stop taking your parents for granted right now.

Be silly, and always be yourself.

You should never feel like you need to "tone yourself down" or act differently to please others. The movie inspired me to keep being my goofy and ridiculous self, because one day I will find someone that loves me for all of that and more. You will find someone that loves every single thing about you if you keep your head high and your heart open.

Watching the relationship between Tim and his wife Mary truly made my heart ache. It was so pure and real that I can only dream to live through a relationship like that.

Look beyond the everyday stressors of life.

After a typically "bad day" at work, take a minute to appreciate some of the positive things about it. You got home to your bed safely, your morning coffee was just right, or maybe someone just kindly held the door for you. Being thankful for the little things can help you keep your head straight and calm you down. You have got to stop missing all of these good moments because your head is filled with negativity. Before you know it, you could be looking back on 90 years of regrets.

Tim took his father's advice and relived each day almost exactly the same as before, but this time taking in all of the good parts and truly appreciating them. Unfortunately, we don't get this opportunity in the real world, so we have to make due with being in the moment.

If you have Netflix, you absolutely must spend two hours out of your day to watch "About Time". Everyone internalizes things differently, but the messages are clear. Life is so beautifully and miraculously set up for us. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain in streaming this movie.

"We're all traveling through time, together, everyday of our lives. All we can do is do our best to relish this remarkable life." - Tim Lake

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
