As established in the last article, abortion is murder. There is no way around it, yet it is legal to commit. Therefore, abortion needs to be made illegal, and there is not one good reason to keep it around. Of course, the pro-choice group will throw around their weak, emotion based defenses, but when you examine the reality of the situation, their protests have nothing to stand upon. Lets take a look at two of them.

One of the first "counters" to anti-abortion legislature or stances is based on religion. In effect, many pro-choice subscribers assume that only religious people are against murder. This is not the case. Many secular groups are opposed to this heinous practice and some good places to explore them are www.secularprolife.org and www.lifemattersjournal.org. Of course, I am not going to just throw a link out and call it good. Here are some more groups of non religious or christian or conservative pro-life supporters: Feminists (surprising I know)http://www.feministsforlife.org, Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the actual doctors in this discussion)http://www.aaplog.org, Gays and Lesbians(in this case know an Pro-Life Alliance of Gays and Lesbians, really holding to their stance of equality) http://www.plagal.org, Democrats(almost as surprising as feminists, but I digress) http://democratsforlife.org, Humanists(should there even be an explanation of why these guys are pro-life?) http://www.prolifehumanists.org, New Wave Feminists( even MORE surprising than their predecessors) http://www.newwavefeminists.com, Pagans (this link is to their facebook page) https://www.facebook.com/ProLifePagans, and, finally, socialists(after all, if all your workers are being killed, those cushy government ruler lifestyles wont have anyone to support them) https://www.facebook.com/ProLifeSocialists. As you can see, the argument that abortion should be kept legal because its only opposition is composed of "raving religious nuts" is a fallacy. Moving on.

Next in line for most popular defense is an appeal to the humanity of pro-life supporters. Apparently, if you make abortion illegal, women will die because they will be forced into back alleys where they will be sliced open with coat hangers and bleed out. The first major problem with this argument is the assumption that every woman will get pregnant and then desire a a now illegal abortion. The second is that the "back alley defense" is based on five myths.

Myth number 1: Illegal abortions are performed by unlicensed and unskilled neophytes. Sorry to burst your bubble sweet cheeks, but before our beloved supreme court legalized systematic murder, abortions were performed by physicians violation their Hippocratic oath. Additionally, because trivia is always fun, the phrase "back alley" refers to the entrance women were instructed to use before and after they had their baby killed.

Myth number 2: Tens of thousand of women die from illegal abortions every year. Thanks to our fear and hysteria mongering, liberal media, this pseudo(false for all you non-Latin readers)-fact was repeated with no regard for its validity. Also responsible for this lie is the late Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a co-founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League whose interests were best served with the propagation of said falsehood(Bernard Nathanson, M.D., with Richard Ostling, Aborting America (Garden City, New York: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1979) 193.). Interestingly, Planned Parenthood's leading statisticians admitted that, before 1973, the official stats on illegal abortion were very accurate. In 1972, there were only thirty-nine maternal deaths related to illegal abortion. Sounds much lower than ten thousand to me.

Myth numero tres: Before abortion was made legal, millions of women had their babies killed illegally(am I the only one who sees the irony in this statement). Just like myth number two, this is another lie fabricated to shock the public into supporting systematic murder(sounds like "the serfs will steal your land, lets go kill them all"-Stalin,paraphrased) by making the dimensions of this "overwhelming" problem seem unstoppable. Actual scientific methods based on the known deaths and complications related to illegal abortion show the actual rate to be sixty thousand to two hundred thousand per year, less than a quarter of a million.

Myth number four: Making abortion illegal will only make women seek out illegal abortions. Here comes Thundercloud Paul to rain on your pity parade: surveys of women partaking of legal abortions confirm that only six to twenty percent would have considered partaking of illegal abortions. This finding also confirms that legalization of abortion has only replaced every illegal abortion with ten to fifteen legal ones. Additionally, research and anecdotal evidence(http://www.theunchoice.com/coerced.htm) finds that most women getting abortions have been coerced or pressured to do so by someone else-and that most would prefer to keep their child instead.

Myth number five: Illegal abortions are less safe than legal abortions. Any improvements in the safety of legal abortions are marginal, at best, and are more than offset by the astronomical increase in the amount of women exposed to the inherent risks of induced abortion. While the percentage of women dying from abortion has decreased, the actual number of women dying has increased along with the number of women suffering from psychological complications. Thanks to Roe v. Wade and other legislation supporting this genocide, the suffering of men, women and families has only increased.

There are also many deaths indirectly associated with abortion. Women are three and a half times more likely to die following an abortion if they have had one in the past and six times more likely to commit suicide than women who give birth. They are also more prone to substance abuse and other risky behavior that can, and will, lead to death. More than thirty studies puplished in the last 10 years(http://www.theunchoice.com/News/colemanresearchart...) have linked abortion to these destructive tendencies and disorders as well as symptoms of PTSD. For more on the coat hanger and back alley myths, check out these sites: http://www.priestsforlife.org/speakersmanual/ch5an... and http://www.nysun.com/new-york/abortion-myth-perpet....

This alone should be enough to ban abortion for good, sadly it is not. Next week we will look at even more straw man arguments for the perpetuation of genocide and gleefully rip them apart, much like the babies are during an abortion.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
