I love my hometown of Duluth, Minnesota; there are just so many great places for dining, shopping, and entertainment. As I have learned this school year, lots of other people like visiting Duluth for weekend getaways and like to ask me for recommendations. Here is a list of some of my favorite places and things in Duluth, as told by the ABC’s. Come join me on this grand circle tour around the “Zenith City!”
A- Aerial Lift Bridge
What a perfect way to start out this tour of Duluth, Minnesota than with its major icon: The Aerial Lift Bridge. This bridge connects the area of Canal Park to the area of Park Point and has a cool function where it lifts up to let boats passing through the harbor out into Lake Superior. This may seem like a great function, but every Duluthian knows that you don’t want to be stuck on one side of the bridge when it lifts up for the boats to pass through. That my friends is the definition of being “bridged.”
B- Burrito Union
Located in the Chester Park neighborhood, this eatery serves up some of my favorite burritos in town. I seriously recommend going here to get at least one of their colossal burritos ( like the “Fat Capitalist”), or even just to sample any of their six, amazing salsas. Their Pineapple-Habanero salsa is my favorite and is a great treat if you want something that will spice up your life.
C- Canal Park
From the Adventure Zone fun park that features laser tag and rock climbing, to the Dewitt-Seitz Market Place that is full of many shops and eateries, this place has it all. This slice of heaven in Duluth, Minnesota is one of my personal hang out spots, and it is popular with groups of teenagers and tourists alike during the hot, summer months. You could spend an entire day exploring everything Canal Park has to offer.
D- Duluth Grill
This is one of the best local eateries in all of Duluth Minnesota. From their mouth-watering breakfast foods to their burgers, to their delicious pies, this place is a must visit for tourists and locals alike. If you happen to stop here on your grand tour of my favorite city, be sure to order a Cinnamon Roll and a plate of Huevos Rancheros for me. You won’t regret it.
E- Enger Tower
Another popular landmark in Duluth. This observation tower hosts some of the best views in Duluth. Seriously, if you climb to the top of the tower (or as far as you can go, saying that parts are closed off for safety), you will get the most expansive view of the city below you. The park surrounding the tower is beautiful too and is a perfect place to have picnics or even just walk around to enjoy nature.
F- Fitger's
The history behind this building, plus the great eateries and local shops, makes this place one of my most recommended places to my friends visiting Duluth. Once a large brewery, this building now hosts a variety of shops, restaurants, and just an overall great atmosphere. I recommend taking a stroll around this building, and then stopping in The Brewhouse for one of their famous Wild Rice Burgers.
G- Gleensheen Mansion
Every Duluthian knows this historic landmark as one of the best field trip spots in elementary school. The Congdon family was one of the wealthiest families in the area at the time, and their mansion suits this reputation. Walking through this historic mansion and taking in all of the old-fashioned, hand-crafted architecture (including the famous pineapples), the furnishings, and the overall charm this mansion brings to the area is one of my favorite activities on rainy days.
H- Hartley Nature Center
This nature center is a must visit for families visiting the area, and for locals looking to escape the city life. The main building features many informative nature exhibits, but that is only the beginning. The outdoor trails are really where it is at, and these paths are fun to explore. There is so much nature around, so you won’t realize that you are in the middle of the city. In the winter months, I recommend renting a pair of snowshoes or skis and spending the day out there; you won’t regret it!
I- Incline Bowling Station
Once a station for the inclined railway system for the steep hills of Duluth, this building now operates as a fun, bowling center for all ages. This place was the best for birthday parties during my younger years and still serves as an excellent place for my friends and me to hang out when we want something fun to do in the city. Oh, and the little videos that they play when you get a strike or a spare are quite funny.
J- JJ Astor
This establishment is located on the top floor of the Raddison Hotel in Downtown Duluth. I have not been to this restaurant in many years, but it was one of my favorites when I was younger. While the food is yummy and plentiful, the real highlight here is the expansive, panoramic views of Duluth Minnesota the restaurant features from its large windows. The restaurant also rotates around in a circle, changing the views diners get from their tables. For young me, this made dinner even more exciting.
K- Karpeles Manuscript Library
Although I personally have not been to this establishment, I have been told my other locals that this place is a must visit. Located in the historic Christian Science Church, this museum features a lot of original documents from the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Schweitzer. Many of my friends used this establishment as a research library for history projects, but it is a great stop for any history buff visiting the area.
L- Lake Superior
A right of passage for every Duluthian is to take a plunge into the cold waters of Lake Superior. Lake Superior is honestly my favorite part of the entire city. It’s the first thing anyone sees if they are visiting the main part of town, and you are just drawn into the sparkly, blue water and the waves rushing into the shoreline. I recommend taking walks down by the lake on the Lakewalk (a running and biking path) and really taking in the beauty of the largest, freshwater lake in the United States.
M- Minnesota Ballet
Are you looking for some art and culture on your visit to Duluth MN? Look no further than the Minnesota Ballet. This professional ballet company has several performances each year that help audiences inspire a love and appreciation for the art of dance. If you are visiting the city during the Christmas season, the company puts on an incredible production of the Nutcracker that delights audiences with its whimsical charm every year, and it is a must see.
N- North Shore Scenic Railroad
This place is a hit for those who have train-enthusiasts in their families, but it also worth a visit for anyone looking for a little railroad history and a grand tour of the great destinations of Duluth, Minnesota. From May to September, train excursions leave from the historic Duluth Depot on some historical track left from Duluth’s old train system and travel through the city up to destinations such as Knife River and even Two Harbors. If any little ones are accompanying you on your visit to Duluth check out the Day Out with Thomas event that takes over the trains for two weekends in August.
O- Old Main Park
Once upon a time, there was a school in Duluth Minnesota called the Duluth Normal School (what is now known today as the University of Minnesota Duluth). After the Old Main building on this campus closed, it was originally going to be converted into apartment buildings but plans changed once vandals set this building on fire in 1993. Only the three main arches remain now, but this historical piece of Duluth and the green lands around it makes for the perfect park to play and relax in. This was one of my favorite places to explore in the summers, and it will become one of yours as well.
P- Portland Malt Shoppe
While taking a stroll on the Lakewalk during the summer months, I recommend grabbing a Malt or a Sundae from this classic ice-cream stop. The malts here are a tradition for my family and me every summer as an end-of-school treat. They are just so creamy and delicious that I want to visit this stop every day it is open. I highly recommend trying either the Chocolate Malt with New-York Cherry ice cream or a Cookie Dough Malt, but really any malt combo you create is going to be great here.
Q- Quiet Walks Out On Park Point
This is where I have to start cheating on this whole alphabet thing, but across the Aerial Lift Bridge lies one of Duluth's quietest neighborhoods: Park Point. Park Point is known for its extremely quiet beaches and parks. I definitely recommend taking a solitary stroll down the shoreline of the beach, or even walk through the park and fly a kite.
R- Rose Garden
Located right by the Lakewalk and Leif Erickson Park, this hot spot is perfect for your photo taking needs on your summer trips to Duluth. There are over 3000 rose bushes representing more than 100 varieties in this beautiful flower oasis. A very popular spot for weddings and graduation photos, this beautiful section of Duluth, Minnesota should not be missed.
S- Spirit Mountain
This is the best mountain to go to if you ever find yourself wanting to ski or snowboard during your stay in Duluth, Minnesota. The hills are well-kept, and the staff is super friendly. If you are visiting the mountain in the summertime, definitely check out the Adventure Park that features an awesome alpine coaster, zip lining, and a giant trampoline.
T- Tischer Creek
If you are ever looking for a great hike in Duluth, this is the place to go. There are so many hiking trails that surround this picturesque creek, and I highly recommend checking out each and every one of them. The hike is not difficult, so this makes this a leisurely walk for anyone in the family who loves some fresh air and beautiful nature. If you get tired while walking, there are also several benches throughout where one can sit, relax, and enjoy observing the gentle flow of the creek.
U- Uncle Louis' Cafe
This restaurant, located in Downtown Duluth, is very popular among college students in town for their relatively well-priced, delicious food. On the weekends, lines are literally out the door as people from around the city are awaiting their chance to dine at this café. If you are there for breakfast, definitely check out the French Toast and ginormous omelets, and if you are there for dinner, check out any of their sandwiches or salads. Their food is definitely equal to or even greater than some of the best home-cooked foods I have ever eaten.
V- Valentini's
This local, Italian eatery right by Lake Superior features some really yummy pasta, pizza, and salads. Although the restaurant is a little more on the expensive side, this is my favorite place to go for special occasions such as birthdays and holidays. I would definitely recommend that you check out their ginormous meatballs and the fettuccine alfredo, as your belly will be quite happy afterward.
W- Whole Foods Co-op
This grocery store and marketplace have some of the yummiest, sustainable food options that I have ever laid my eyes on. The food in their marketplace, like their chicken and vegetables, are quite delicious and are ideal for those who are looking to eat a little healthier. Also, their peanut butter is out of this world!
X- X-mas City Of The North Parade
The Christmas City of the North Parade is the largest event of the holiday season in Duluth, Minnesota. There are so many lights, dancers, and amazing floats that make this experience fun, festive, and one of the most beloved annual events in Duluth. Make sure to snag your spot along the route early, as spots get taken as early as three hours before the parade starts!
Y- Yummy Cakes From How Sweet It Is Cakes
Another cheat on my part, but How Sweet It Is Cakes has many offerings in their bakery including pies, cookies, muffins, scones, and they also host a variety of delicious deli sandwiches. However, the real highlight here is their yummy cakes. How Sweet It Is Cakes features many different cake flavors ranging from your classic yellow to a sophisticated honey lavender that can be spiced up with many different fillings. This isn't your grandma's bakery!
Z- Zeitgeist Center
Located in Downtown Duluth, this cultural community center houses the Zinema 2, a movie theater for non- mainstream films. As well as the Teatro Zuccone, a theater that houses both excellent theatrical performances and the always hilarious Renegade Improv show on Friday and Saturday nights. As well as the Zeitgeist Arts Café, a bistro the serves some really yummy small plates. Check out this artistic powerhouse on your next trip to Duluth, Minnesota.
I hope you enjoyed my tour of my favorite city and home; you should come see this place for yourself sometime soon.
