The ABCs Of CofC

Loving CofC is as easy as ABC!

Charleston is a spectacular city filled with restaurants, beaches, shopping and so much more. College of Charleston sits right in the heart of downtown, and that’s just one reason that makes it so great. Loving CofC is as easy as ABC! And here are just a few of the reasons that make CofC the place to be.

A - Addlestone Library

The daily hangout for just about every CofC student. There’s nothing quite like a late night at Club Addy, and the fact that it has a Snapchat filter puts the icing on the cake. Best of luck finding a table during finals week!

B - Berry Hall ghosts

Ask anyone and they could tell you that spirits haunt the halls of this dorm. Rumor has it that it was built on the site of an orphanage that burned down years ago. Spend enough time there and you’ll hear the occasional marbles rolling down the hallways.

C - Clyde the Cougar

Our beloved mascot. Give him a pet every time you pass him in Cougar Mall for good luck.

D - Dogs on campus

The most beautiful site. “Hey, can I pet your dog?” -Me, every time I see a furry friend roaming around campus.

E - Emoji (CofCmoji)

Reason #182930 that CofC is great - we have our own emojis.

F - Free Stuff

The way to a college kid’s heart. Half of the events I go to are only for the free t-shirts, the free food or the free stuff.

G - Glenn McConnell

Our president > yours. Four for you, Glenn McCoco! You go, Glenn McCoco!

H - Harbor Walk

Although you might hate your 8:30 am class a mile away from campus, the views are worth it. How many schools can you think of get to have classes at the Aquarium?

I - In Between Classes

Trying to cross the intersection of Calhoun Street and St. Philip Street in between classes? Forget about it! You WILL get plowed down by the flocking crowds.

J - Jack’s Cafe

Another must-visit. Pancakes and hot cocoa at 1 am on a Saturday night. Count me in.

K - King Street

One of the top shopping streets in the US, and we’re lucky enough that our campus sits parallel to it. As a college student I do more window shopping than buying, but I’m still not complaining.

L - Liberty Fresh Food Company

Often nicknamed Chez Liberté, I don’t know what I would do without the Make-Your-Own Stir Fry Station or the personalized Charleston waffle maker. And the best part is the annual Midnight Breakfast during finals each semester.

M - Mail Services

Oh! You just checked your Amazon.com shipping tracker and it says your package was delivered today! Well, too bad you’ll have to wait a few days for Mail Services to process it and let you know that it’s ready for pickup!

N - Nicholas Sparks

Our claim-to-fame on every campus tour, yes. The Notebook and Dear John movies were filmed on the CofC campus.

O - Office Hours

Going to office hours is fun when your professor’s office is a historic house and you spend your time sitting on the porch in rocking chairs. Gotta love Charleston.

P - Patriots Point

The Homefield of our CofC Baseball and Soccer Teams. Who needs a football team when you have Friday Night Fútbol Games?

Q - Queen Street

In my opinion, the most beautiful street in all of the city. So many beautiful houses with beautiful flower boxes. So many photo ops.

R - Randolph Hall

If you don’t take a picture every time you walk by, do you even go to CofC???

S - (Charleston) Shuffle

Yes, I have face-planted on the uneven bricks around the city. The sidewalk on St. Philip Street in front of the Simmons Center - I fall every time.

T - TD Arena

CofC lives for basketball games in TD Arena. Hey, remember that time we beat LSU? Same. Go Cougs.

U - Unpredictable weather

You better have your umbrella with you every day because you never know when the rain will start, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Also, it will be humid from April-November, and there’s nothing you can do about that frizzy hair and shiny face after walking across campus.

V - Vacation Destination

We live where you vacation! Just minutes from the beach, within walking distance of hundreds of shops, restaurants and attractions - what could be better?

W - Waterfront Park

Again, another photo op. If you’ve never taken a picture with your girlies with your feet in the Pineapple Fountain, do you even live here???

X - EXhibits

So many of our fellow CofC students are so artistically talented, and the Halsey Center showcases all of that great work. A must-see.

Y - Y’all

Welcome to the South, where we say y’all and drink sweet tea.

Z - Zero Dining Dollars

Nothing like the end of the semester when you can no longer eat at Stern or get Starbucks every day. Looks like it’s Chez Liberté.

CofC is the best school ever. Go Cougars!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
